I thought I almost had it…
I need to make a new pan for the bronk 250 soon - with rear sump to avoid the front chunk. From another discussion I gathered there were a few years of the above. The bronk even had a 200 for 2 yrs. I reasoned if I got an oil picup or more importantly the tube, I could make a rear sump for the 250. I thought it would fit, from the 200 into the oil pump bolt up area - fashion on the old or the correct 200 pick up/screen. jimmyv65 just cut off the front of his 250 pan and welded/brazed a flat plate across there. I will be on the gradients and don't trust this solution…

Can folks tell me if this would work. The engine assembler can braze the 170 (rear sump) pan and 250's 'ring' together. Do you think the long tube seen in Jackfish's 200 to be the missing link to this. Some have said "Just bend the tube around" but I fear brakage, kinking, etc. bubba has expressed the importance of 1/8th to 1/4 inch hight above the pan's for the proper pick up of oil there…

All is planning only - as the motor is not in yet but I want to be prepaired for that step before hand so as to reduce the friend's other problems as he helps me install. A solution (pick up in hand) could go a long way in this process ~

Thanks for your "experienced brain" loan!

Yes you should be able to cut the sump off a 170 or 200 Bronco oil pan and weld or braze it in place on a 250 oil pan. If it's carefully measured so the sump ends up to be at the same height setting on the block or a table top as the 170 or 200 pan then the oil pickup tube from that same 170 or 200 is also going to be a real good fit. But if your planing on lowering the sump some for some extra oil pan capacity then the oil pickup tube will need to be dropped to fit you can use modeling clay to check that the height is set to between 1/8 and a 1/4 inch. if I was you I would also add a set of front and rear baffles inside the pan to help keep the oil near the pickup tube when your climbing a hill or going down an incline so you don't loose your oil pressure too. Good luck

Thanks bubba.

I had all that in line 4 this project but the larger cap. sump you mention (the rocks are close enuff ! ). However all went to 5h!t when I found the 'rear sump 200 oil pick up' is no longer made by Pioneer Automotive Industries. I wondered Y Summit had no pic with it's listing ([PIO-] OPS-65-BS1). Called them - "Discontinued." Called Pioneer - "Discontinued w/o plans for continuing."

Got a 170 & two 250 pans to try… humm, wonder how to get a rear sump 200 (don't think there ever was a 'rear' on a 250) oil pick up (tube & screen")? Not sure the think would bolt to the 250 or work in a cobbled pan anyway…

:bang: well then you also could mod the stock oil pickup tube too. I use to make my own from scratch to fit my custom oil pans it's really easier then building or rebuilding the sump. A lenght of tubing slightly bigger so the original will side inside it to extend theclenght. Fill it with sand if you need to bend it to fit then clean it up good and weld or braze all the pieces together. Good luck Chad

no junk yards around here for that (car-parts.com will be tried) everything 10 yrs old goes to the crusher. Just need to know:

What yrs & models have a rear sump (200/250) motor?

I like the double pipe idea. Will measure the OD/ID, guesstimate the length. Any metal is OK, no special 'breed" required ( I know alu touching steel will chemically destruct)?

Any Fairmont/Zephyr or 80-83 Mustang with a 3.3L will have a rear sump engine.
Or any Fox Body vehicle (early 80's LTD) with a inline six will have a rear sump.

Here's a link to all the Fox Platform vehicles:

Nothing fancy needed just Mild steel is good so you can weld or braze it up.

Thank you BOTH !
