just got my mustang back from having the I6 200 engine rebuilt... the casting numbers say the head is from a 66 mustang, and the block is from a 78 fairmont... is this a problem... were there signifigant differences in these years? would this block require a new torque converter or transmission? im having some new vibrations that my mechanic and i are having trouble tracking down... could they be related? i can provide more detail if needed...

it would have been more idea to be the other way around...
later head on a older block...

the 78 and newer heads breathed better...

but if your 78 bottom end is strong...no problem...

two things come to mind.
1. I think the '78 rods are not forged like the older rods.
2. The your 66 head's log volume(the log itself) is less than the later log heads. (does that make sense?)

you could be right on that....

but if the rods ARENT forged...is that better or worse?

the bonus to a newer bottom end is...that it may not have had abuse and many manymiles on it...but if its been rebuilt, who cares

did you have any head work while it was apart, like a 3 angle vavle job and opening up oil passages?

get thge falcon six handbook...it will help

forged is better unless you drive like an old lady then it doesn't matter.

Did you install a new harmonic-balancer? Did you have the rotating assembly balanced (piston, crank, rods, etc) by a machine shop? These engines are night and day differance when balanced at higher RPM'S!

both the block and the head have been rebuilt... to the best of my knowledge only the actual block was reused, should be all new hardware inside... i do not know who did the work (my mechanic farmed it out), or what hardware was used... i found out checking casting numbers...

im not really concerned with souping it up, and since the block is already there it would be nice if it could stay... there is a strange RPM dependent vibration in the whole car... this is all i really care about fixing...

BEN you may be onto something... should i try a new harmonic balancer? or do i need to get my mechanic to replace the block with a 66?

thanks for all you help...

if the block aint broke...dont need to replace it...

something OTHER than the block or head being bad....sinec it was just rebuilt. KEEp IT
