Rough Idle

66 200 with 1100 carb. The car starts right up everytime. It just wants to idle rough and miss alot. It has done this since I got the car. Here is what I have done so far to try and correct the problem.

Installed new Dist Cap, Rotor, Wires, Plugs, Fuel filter, Pvc, Electronic points

Checked for vacuum leaks. None

Ran a compression check and all cylinders are approx 125-150. Between 1 & 2 there seemed to be a slow leak so I replaced the head gasket ( Felpro ). The old gasket looked fine and so did the valves. The car does not smoke.

I took it to a shop to see if they could come up with an answer and the only thing they suggested was that my distributor might be the issue. They said that the rotor seemed real loose. If hold the rotor in your hand you can twist it a good .5 inch. Is this normal?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I think the rotational play is probably normal. The advance mechanism should be moving when you do this. I have not done that on a Load-a-Matic distributor, so I may be wrong.
If you have the original distributor, I would check to make sure the advance is working properly.

Perhaps take a look at your carb. My 66 200 did the same when I first bought it. The carb was a mess. It ran rough would not idle like yours.

I'm thinking all the passages in the carb may be junked up. The idle vacuum passages are real small and if they get dirt or any foreignmatter in them, good bye smooth idle.

If you got spark, and air...check fuel. I would replace the fuel filter with a clear glass one ($10). Also do a check to see that a good flow of fuel is pumping out into a jar. I got about half a pint in 10 seconds or so.

Good luck,

have you checked the tune at all? set the base timing and play with the idle mixture. my falcon would have to idle really high before i opened up the adjustment needle (it was starving for fuel) after i opened that up i was able to run my idle down. now i just need to adjust the valve lash...
