it was about 7:30 in the morning and i was leaving to go to class...i started up the car and its started up fine for about 20-30 seconds...then, the engine started to act up like it was going to shut off but it didnt...i then turn off the car and started it up again...again, it started acting up!!! i was running late for football practice so i got desperate and popped the hood and turn the idle screw a little less and started up...it got me to school and back but i would kind of like to go back to teh way i had my car tuned because it was running and sounding awesome...was this just a phase? it was cold but i dont think too cold...however, i gapped my plugs to about .045 instead of .040...i am going to change this because i did hear detonation problems...can the gap plug be a factor if so im going to gap it back down but if im to be under the hood should i adjust anything else?

when you say acting up what do you mean??? the gap all depends on what kind of set up you have, what kind of ignition do you have in there? .045 is not too much for the right set up. how long ago did you do the gapping of the plugs?? i am verly certin if it was gonna have a problem with the gapping it would of done it right after you gapped them.

It could just be that the needle valve is intermittantly sticking closed, choking the fuel supply. Doesn't sound like a gap problem to me. I think the problem is fuel flow. It could be a clogged filter between the pump and carb too.

well the engine sounded like it was struggling to stay on and you can definetely hear it when it came out the exhaust...it was throwing out exhaust in parts instead of a steady flow...the engine was also moving erractically and the car was shaking considerably...i gapped my plugs this past sunday but ive only driven it a total of 30 miles since the plugs...i dont really think the plugs were thereason for this occurance but i do know that i gapped them to high...stock dist. with pertronix, flamethrower coil, and pertronix 7mm wires...

I would also check the coil. I have gone through 3 coils since Dec. I am not sure why, but I had a simmilar problem last Sat, and it was coil number 2 that failed. So you might want to check that out too. If it is shaking badly as you say, check the resistance of the wires as well.

Possibilities
1. Clogged fuel filter
2. Stuck Needle valve
3. Bad coil
4. Bad plug
5. Bad wire/s
6. Crack in dizzy cap

If you have the equpment and the time. Check the compression on each cylinder..ZZ
