setting float level with turbo...?

hmmm is it a bad thing if when your engine is running and you pull the pcv valve thingy black oil like smoke is coming out pretty fast? is that from
blowby?

black smoke from the PCV hole in the valve cover??!!?

That would not be normal

.... thanks... lol sooo ummm I finished milling the choke horn and ummm filled the hole, and re ran some some vacuum lines and got it all sorted out and only had time to start it. it was idlingat 10 or so but didnt want to stay running, and the gasline that goes into the carb was leakign so I shut it down and now Im home getting ready fro work... Im gonna try to get it better tomorrow before work and see what else I can come across... I also noticed I coudl screw in theidle mixture screws and it stayed running... what would that mean? My dads not home for me to ask advice... ummm I think thats all and linc thanks for the joke... I needed that before my long day of work...

Thanks for the links linc. I especially liked the bottom one. I originally turned the screws without the tach method and only going by the vacuum but it makes more sense now! Ill mess around with thtat tomorrow along with the float.

ugh well... I got it running MUCH better. I can nail the gas and it goes but I guess the float needs adjusted higher... I can get on it and it stays good for a second then it acts like its running out of fuel and sputters. It does get going better though. Im gonna look at it tomrrow further... I am off to work now...

T-bone...

I drove mine this weekend and it was doing the same thing. great once boost builds then it drops off after a few seconds. I think I might see if I can get a V8 pump worked out or just pitch it all and start with EFI. I also think I need a different PV as when I give it part throttle (like 1/2) it feels soggy. well it is back in storage (death in the family keeping me form moving it right now)

Tommy you are running a stock pump right that is referenced?

Ya Im runnig the stock pump. Im gonna go look at it later today and see what I can find, let me know how the v8 pump findingd go. but anyway it feels like a completely different car now... it doesnt bog wen you go to give it gas.. its sooooo wierd. but then after you get on it it doesnt like to go for a bit... like the bowls running dry. I cant see the gas at the bottom of the sight plug anymore. Im gonna see if it still isnt showing any later today. Was it Dan (import killer) that had a SBC fuelpump with the stock arm? anone have any insight towards a better fuel pump other than going electric? Thanks, Tommy

problem is no one makes a good high output mechanical pummp for these engines.

You could try an inexpensive electric fuel pump on the frame between the tank and the mechanical pump inlet, that helps a LOT!!! Anything to make the engine driven pump's job easier.

I did just that with the Carter super strip pump for the SBC and replaced with the stock pump arm. It wasn't all that hard, they do have extra springs on the arm that comes with it so to keep it under control at higher rpms, but I did not use them. Too much trouble to install on the hardened stock pump arm. Just drill out the rod holding the stock arm in and it comes right out, I had to grind on the arm to fit it's forked end in, but not much at all. If you do do this you will know what I am talking about. Then I inserted the stock arm, inserted the pump's retaining rod and then jb-welded the hole over where the rod goes in at, and waa-laa.

My stock pump would not keep up fuel demands, well at 15 psi anyways, it might have at 10 psi, but I put on the new pump before I turned the boost down. Go for it Tommy, it is only money!

I have looked at swapping in a V8 pump. I compared a stock pump to an aftermarket V8 pump at the local speed shop. the only issue I can see is the portion of the lever arm that is in the pump is longer on the V8 pump (pump housing is larger in diameter) this difference is smallish (about 1/4") so not sure if this will be close enough to work ok on it.

some pumps had a one piece arm made of 3 or so riveted together. on this style arm I am not sure if it could be "rebuilt" to work on our motors or not.

the other style uses a one piece stamped arm. this could be cut and welded but I am not sure if I would trust a weld on that kind of a part. (thin high stress part)

I do know that if you get a marine rated pump they will have a threaded or nippled vent port on them (read already boost referenced) which is a handy thing to have.

woah this thread is getting busy... and I found out my problems... in my hurry (ya I know you shoudl never hurry while working on an important part of your car) I manged to forget to put the vent top piece thing back in the top of the carb, I did that today and took it out no problems with the hig rpms but it still isnt keeping fuel when I need it after I get on it (its ok once it starts building boost or is you hadnt gotten on it for a minute or something... but it is running SOOOOOO much better... I set the float a tad higher and I still cnat see fuel so Im gonna try higher thursday and try to get everything sorted out for the strip. as for the wastegate problem it only appears to spool to 13psi and I held on it till about 45 in 1st and shifted into 2nd and it left 2 long marks when it shifted into 2nd it appears to no tbe pinging and everything seems to be o.k. now I just have to get the rear end sorted out somehow... :?

This morning before school I ordered the carter superstrip pump from jegs. shoudl be here in a few days. :D Kirk helped me out with the its only money statement

YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

Let me know if you have any questions about the swap, it is not hard at all, and take those high rev springs off, you don't need them. Don't forget to boost reference it either, very simple.

well after all the good news... unfortunately I have bad news... again, nothing major it just seems to be running like it was before... I had a problem with the carb hat sealing and I managed to strip the thread in the car and I rethreaded it and got it together and then the bottom of the carb was leaking gas so I pulled the carb and tightened the 5 bottom screws and got it together and messed with the float while it was apart and tried getting my dad to help me I explained to him what it was doing and he told me I was turning the wrong nut and finally after a good 10 minutes he realized he was wrong and now its way off but it was set as high as it would go but it still wasnt showing anything... so were gonna pull it again and see whats goin on with the float...

I have the opposite problem, my float is bottomed out it seems and I still get TOO much fuel in the bowl it seems, to the point it wont run somtimes. It smells rich, but then I was gettin some detonation at 7psi. Messed with it a bit and got it to quit pingin and it runs real nice, but not perfect...what pump is good for 15-20psi?
Matt

hmmm thats wierd. Im going to pull the bowl and see whats going on today after school. its sooo exciting when it finally starts running right....

well... bad news...and this is worse than theother bad news it appears the turbo pulled a beat down on the tranny... I took it for a drive tonight to see how the changes affected it and I went through 1st and second and shifted into 3rd and it went into neutral and bounced off the limiter and I let off and then it went in soooo its not lookin so good... Ill let you guys know how things go tomorrow though. If it is the transmission what do you suggest? A beefed up c4 or convert to a 5 speed? My intentions are to make it something that does well at the track however make it streetable enough to drive it to shows...

Just a FYI.....

Car Quest makes a nice electric fuel pump for around $50.00 I installed one on mine, tore out the cheesy 5/16 fuel line and replaced it with 3/8 line.

Between the electric and stock pump I'm getting a steady 8 psi right at my 500 cfm carb :D :D :D

Thought it was a lot cheeper than spending the money on a Holley electric pump.

Later,

Doug
