setting float level with turbo...?

If it is the transmission what do you suggest? A beefed up c4 or convert to a 5 speed? My intentions are to make it something that does well at the track however make it streetable

what do you have now? auto or 3-speed?

I highly recommend the T-5!!

Car Quest makes a nice electric fuel pump for around $50.00 I installed one on mine, tore out the cheesy 5/16 fuel line and replaced it with 3/8 line........Thought it was a lot cheeper than spending the money on a Holley electric pump.

I bought my Holley Red "factory reman" (but looked like brand new) off ebay for $24.

I fed it into the inlet of my stock, boost referenced mechanical pump and that was good to 10 psi of boost (17 psi fuel pressure)

Even when running 103 mph in the 1/4, it was all done through 5/16 line. In fact, the stock 5/16" (8mm) fuel line in all late model EFI fords (including my 97 Mustang) is good to 600 HP.

A simple redneck look at fuel lines:

It's easier to stuff a wire through a 3/8" line clogged by mud-daubers.

The circumference of a 3/8" line is 1.17". For a 5/16" line, it's 0.98"

The cross-section of a 3/8" line is 0.0368155389 in². For a 5/16" line it is 0.0153398079, or about half as much.

When you compare the amount of surface area on the tube, to the volume inside the tube, fuel in a 3/8 line is probably going to be less affected by outside heat, all else remaining the same.

Plus it looks impressive!

right now I have a stock c4 with a transgo shift kit. Im leavin now to drive it again and check fluids. Ill let you guys know whats going on and if I go how I do. I was hoping to get a video of it as always.

I think it looks overkill.....
I've completely gotten over any hang-ups over appearance. I'm more of a "function" over "form" kind of guy.

I also had a 1968 Plymouth Road Runner with 440/TQ carb from a '72 Imperial. It ran low 13's in the 1/4 mile (car was 3600 lbs!) and that was through the stock 5/16" fuel line.

Built right, it can handle a fair bit of power. Torque converter might be another story.

At least they are so simple you can rebuild it yourself.

well, I made it to the track... I got up at 6 am waited for it to start getting light out, got a 5 gallon can full of premium, put 3 or so gallons in and took it for a spin, it was bogging as bad as ever and it seemed to be shifting o.k. into 3rd when it would go (I need a chack alve for the transmisison line) and so yea I got it on the trailor and we left kinda late because my dad forgot we were going and had to do some errands and we leave... after an hour and a half we arrive I drive the car off the trailor well at least attempt to and felt the wheel jerk... so my dad who was "guiding me off" forgot to mention there was a rod for the back gates stickign out... and there went the sidewall of the tire... and of coarse noone has a 14" tire they would sell to us, and noone had a 4.5" bolt pattern four lug rim, but we got the announcer to ask over the intercom and noone came forward so somone suggested buing one at a local walmart 15 miles away so I left withth e rim and tire got there waited in a huge line (who knew the tire lube express crap would be so busy... doesnt anyone do their own maintanance anymore?!?!) and I get up there and told em I needed the cheapes 195/75 14" tire used if at all possible, they dont give/sell used tires so I ahd to buy a new one and the mounted it and I left a good hour to an hour and a half later... I was not happy, so I get to the track put it on and line up... the line wasnt too bad but anywho I got to race my first victum... or what was supposed to be an all out beat down... so I get to the staging lanes and go around the burnout box and start to brake torque... the look on peoples faces was priceless... you could hear it stumble then it woudl start to spool and get kinda loud then it would break the tire loose and the spooling would get really loud and I would let off the brake and roll forward... I got A TON of comliments and had 2 people ask me if it was a 351... lol so ya get lined up and decided I would make sur eit woul make it down the track so I gave it some gas while holding the brake so it was making 0 vacuum/boost and light turns I take off and ease onto it then floor it... I took off decently no tire spin and watched as the civic I was racing get further and further behind then I short shited 2nd and got to around 60 and I hear some loud clunking rattling tapping sorta noises and let off, tried shifting in to theird when it went in I gave it more gas and it started again, and I just cruised to the end... I ran 1 16.6 at 65 ph, 1/8th mile trap speed was 70... lol and I still beat the civic by quite a bit... so I thought I broke something... opened the hood and found nothing wrong, I drove it to the staging lanes and retarded the timing a tad and hoped it didnt happen again the 60 foot was 2.7 lol so I go again knowing I can possibly build boost without tire spin, I gave it a litle more gas (I didnt have the tach) and got it to around 1-2psi, ran a 16.3, it still wasnt wanting to shift into 3rd you would have to let off it woudl go then you coudl et back on it. I knew 15's were possible. next run held through 1'st and 2'nd gear longer, still not anytihng more on the line ran a 16.020. next run a little later and ran a 16.011 still slightly improving, now I started worrying about getting off the line a little more but it would still bog and act liek it was leaning out then it would put you in the seat and the front would raise up a bit and take off. The next runs were between 5-7 psi on the line, I went and it felt pretty good still stumblign off the line and it ran a 15.997 60' was 2.449 and trap speed was 83. The best run I made was at 7 or so psi and I ran a 15.840. I know if I coudl get it to run right it would be closer to a 14 as it wouldnt like to go and not having a tach didnt help. I figured out the noises was actually the fender moving and hitting the bottom of the car (the bottom bolt wasnt in) overall I said my goal was 15's and I know it could do better the tire had alot of air out and never spun so I know if it did spool higher it would have done better. anyone think the bogging trying to get going could be low fuel pressure? it acts retarded until it starts spooling, I think (it was awhile ago) That the pressure at idle was 3 or 4 psi and under boost went to 13 or 14. the car only ran good once, no matter what I do with the float or timing it always does that. either way I have the carter pump thats gonna be here monday so we'll see what happens... and I didnt get a video... Ill be sure to do one of it roasting the tires rolling like people requested, and maybe one when it leaves strips going into 2nd, but yea Im tired and am prolly gonna take a nap... soo anyone have a suggestion as to what I shoudl do next? oh and by the end if you ran through 2nd long enough it shifted into 3rd fine. Tommy

You need a check valve and bleed orifice in the vacuum modulator line.

Lifting so it will shift will eat the trans in a hurry.

He needs paragraphs, too. It's like reading Kerouac about cars.

ll I was pretty much rambling on... and on and on... lol I didnt even bother readign it after I typed it to proofread... I Didnt know it was half that long...

Hey Tommy,
What's your timing look like, what advance are you using? I have a slight bog/hesistation when coming off the throttle and it is due to timing. Even with 17 degrees initial and only 10 degrees mechanical adv that I have currently, it tends not to be enough. If I could somehow use the vac adv off the port side I think it would solve it, but then again it would be too much advance and port vac under boost does funny things. This is when the MSD ignition comes into play, where you can drop your timing per psi of boost in the upper rpms (more money).
What you do is get your 'stang running real good, win some races and get a sponsor, then you can have all the fancy parts. I wish it was that easy, too.

Kirk

come to think of it the timing is set back quite a bit and I only disconnected the vacuum advance so its onl yrunning what the mechanical will allow for. I thought I sent linc a pm about sometihng I read in my turbo book discussing using a check valve in conjunction with an orifice woah time to go ill say more later.

don't think I got that one

yea it never sent? Ill post it here for anyone else to read... basically I had read in my turbo book abotu using an orifice and a check valve with the vacuum advance on the dizzy.

heres the pic... now im off to modify my new fuel pump...man that things huge...

I have the same book, but by the looks of the diagram it is a draw-thru. Aren't there some differences b/tw the blow thru and draw thru on carb vacuums under boost? Maybe i am not thinking right.

I was going to try the dual diaphram, but never could get it right because the port-side of the vacuum signal did funny things. So I just basically copied what Will did to Kelly's falcon...mech adv only at 10*.

Kirk

I didnt do anything with mine I have the timing set at 12* if I remember... and I retarded it some when racing after I heard al the noise but I dont know what it was set to but there was no pinging... I may end up just buying the msd btm addon and run it with my 6al... I shoudl have just spent the money in the first place but I guess Im getting into it alittle more seriously... I shoudl probably sell my turbo setup on eba yor something in hopes that somone here could use it... the over boosting doesnt seem to be a problem it goes to around 10-12 and stayed the whole way down the strip all 6 runs. and goign back to the timing thing I had messed with the timing when it had run better but I dont remember what I had set it to that wil be the next thing I look at.. unfortunately its freakin pouring as usual.... stupid florida and its afternoon showers... its never doen this as far as I can remember until this year... and of coarse it only rains on my days off...

lemme know if you are looking for a T3 setup. I think my car is gonna stay parked for a LONG time and might just go upgrade to a T4 on a new header.
