smog pump removal = cracked manifold?

I disconnected my smog pump when I first got my '81 200i6 Mustang. The other night, as I was broken down (coil went out) a guy stopped to give me a hand. He mentioned that disabling the smog pump can lead to a cracked exhaust manifold? I was just about ready to remove the pump and it's billion vac. lines this weekend, but now I'm second guessing it. I sure would like to have a cleaner looking engine (probably add a header as well), but I was curious if anyone had ever seen this happen?

Pull the parasite and plug the holes with threaded brass plugs available at a good parts place.

I dunno. The time I fed crushed ice through my smog pump, it cracked the exhaust manifold nicely. :roll:

His personal exhaust is plugged. I have been pulling them off for 40 years, nary a problem.
