Spark Plug Question

Hey all,

No problems this time, just a question. Now that the car is running better than ever, I wanted to check a few things and make sure I'm taking full advantage of the new Pertronix I unit. So, what gap can I put my plugs too? And what does that do for me?

Thanks,
Cory

I'm not sure you are getting a hotter spark from the pertronix, it is just more stable because of removing the points from the equation, you are still limited by the cap and rotor and plug wires on the loadomatic. In the future you might consider a swap to the duraspark II and aftermarket coil which will give you centrifugal advance, high voltage cap, rotor and 8 mil wires as well as a hotter coil to feed them. The manuals say .45 plug gap with the DSII, I split the diff and run mine at .40. If you're running the stock 1100 carb you will have to plug the spark control valve and go to manifold vac, plenty of info here and on the classic inlines site.

Yes, indeed the Petronix will give you a better, stronger spark than your OEM points. Start by setting the gap at .045" and drive it that way for a week or so, paying close attention to the engines performance. If all seem normal, no miss at idle or at higher rpm, then try .050" and assess again. As you open the gap you will be creating more stress on all other components, such as spark plugs, plug wires, coil and all connections. IF you start to get misses, reduce the gap by .002" until it goes away, or, start replacing parts until you find the week link.

There is no perfect gap for all applications. Factory settings are a generality that works good most of the time with a large safety margin. To find what is best for your specific situation it will be a process of trial and assessment.

Good luck.

Not if he's using the stock coil with the resistor wire in place.

8) my advice is to gap the plugs at .040 with the electronic ignition. you dont need more than that.

Awesome!! Thanks for all the help guys. I'm slowly learning more and more about all this facinating tech, thanks to everyone here. It helps to know that whatever the problem is, I can more than likely find the answer on here.

Thanks,
Cory
