i ordered a speedo cable for my 65 stang from National parts depot with an auto c4 tranny...it came without any "what i would call gears on it" where it goes into the tranny, the old one i took out that was for a manual had the white "gears on them"... the new one should have these too shouldn't it?? do they come seperate or are they not needed on the automatic..

Or, swap the gear over to the new cable, it's only held on with a spring clip.

If you need a new/different gear, check your local Ford house, they often have them in stock.

thanks guys... always something more to buy!! :) that's why we love these old cars!

tried looking for a gear....is there a particular one that is listed for an automatic c-4 tranny for the 65 mustang??? i tried looking it up in the npd book and they have like 10 different ones, right hand, left hand, brown,pink,white,etc.. its on the drivers side so it's right hand rotation, but don't know about the color or how many gears....anyone have any idea???? thanks

I take it you don't have the gear that was on the end of your old cable? Without knowing how many teeth it had, it's going to be hit-and-miss trying to get the right one.

Each additional tooth on the cable driven gear will make the speedo read about 5 mph slower, as a rule of thumb.

There are a couple of websites with calculators where you input your rear axle ratio, tire size, and the number of teeth on the tranny driving gear, and they'll figure how many teeth you need on the cable driven gear, but offhand I don't remember where they are...might search this board or maybe www.tffn.net's forum...
