Sputters at low rpm idle

My engine has to idle at at least 900 rpm or it runs really rough and acts like its going to die. Is this normal or is it just the faulty stock log intakes.

1. Hook up a vacuum gauge, and see what readings you get. (Check against chart.)

2. Advance/retard timing, see if it smooths out. (Remember to disconnect & plug vacuum line to distributor.)

3. Run a propane torch (not lit) around different gasket areas; see if it affects the idle. If so, vacuum leak. Fix it.

4. Disconnect one plug at a time, see if one of them fails to make it worse, tereby letting you know there's something wrong with that cylinder.

5. Run a compression test.

If none of these work, come back for more.
