Stall Converter Compatibility

Hi Guy's,

Does anyone know if a stall converter from a V8 (C10 Tranny) will suit a 250 (C4 Tranny).

The input shaft is not a problem (I have tried this)

I think there's an issue with the flex plate and crank matching up??

Thanks

Thanks for that.

Can I simply open up new holes on the flex plate?

Or, does anyone have a cheap 2500~2800 stall to suit a C4? :?:

bye

What's cheap? Try TCI (Kayver engineering) Sydney for new units. XE will have a better idea about "rerating" a 302 stallie to the equivalent six RPM. The guys at TCI might be able to help, too (can run a little hot and cold). Unless the converter centres on a boss into the flex, it's not a good idea to ream those holes. I reamed the centre crank bolt holes to fit a C4 on a 200, but for a lo-po application. You will need an auxiliary cooler.

Adam.

I only deal with really sick people who like putting 2250 stall FMX torque converters on 221 cranks with Cleveland flywheels on Aussie 250 blocks....me!

I don't know if the V8 Cleveland C4/C10 and 250 C4 T/c's are similar, it my just need modification of the locating tangs as the bolt spacing could be different. The teeth count and diameter is different on the flywheel, so you cant swop it all over. If the T/c's can engage just so, it will work.

The six cylinder C4 can be bolted to a C10 bellhousing, but the 250 has a four bolt bell, not a six bolter.

As for the stall speed, your on your own. A V8 converter should be the go, and for the last 15 years, Kayver engineering has won accolades from Cortina/Capri V8 punters such as Bob Pinnelli, XR8 racers.

Hi,

I did the right thing today  . I ordered a "NEW" 2500rpm high stall due for delivery this Friday!!!! Cost was a very NASTY $450.00. No lunch for a year!

Hopfully Friday I get the tranny ready..Saterday install it....Saterday afternoon.....You got it.....BIG BURNOUTSSS!!!

I must relax now!!

I'm about to pop a tyre!

Bye

Upate......

I went to pick up the new convertor on Friday and was shocked at what I saw  . Sitting on the counter was the same convertor that I allready bought second had for $100.00. Same bolt patern as the V8 stall.

I explained to the bloke that I allready have a similar convertor and that I was expecting this new one to bolt up to the flexplate of my 250. He was a little confused, as was I. Anyway, he gave me my money back and said that they would sell that stall to someone else anyway!!

To cut a long story short...I needed to get a new flexplate of a F250 which comes out standard with a C4 behind a 4.1. (Same as XD) This cost $100.00.

The input shaft on the auto was changed to 26 spline (C9 ??) and bob's your uncle!!!

I got the box built on Saterday and installed on Sunday...With the usual head F*&^'s. The shifter needed to be chopped down, cooler lines needed to swap sides and to top it off, the rear uni joint was also routed.

Test drive..Stall speed = 2900RPM - 400rpm more than expected - But I like it!! - The tyres don't!!!

The car drives almost like a standard stall under normal driving, but when you nail it - INSTANT LOVE!

I still have a few issues with kickdown and the modulator causing gear change problems - into thrid mainly.

We will see how we go...

bye

Hi Guy's ...and tranny specialists!!!

I NEED HELP....

Does anyone have any suggestions???

Problem.....My C4 automatic will not go into third gear at all!!

Symptoms..
If you leave the shifter in "drive" the auto stays in first gear and never changes into second, regardless of how hard you rev the engine. When you back off the gas the revs drop back to idle but the car continues to roll without engine braking - Feels like the car is in neutral until I rev it again.

Selecting "second" gear works fine all the time!

Selecting "first" gear works as expected with engine braking when I back off the gas.

If I go through the gears, first, second is fine but when I select third it feels like it goes into neutral.

Reverse gear works fine!

Thing I have checked...

Replaced modulator valve..
Adjusted modulator valve (screwed in and out)
Shortened modulator valve pin..
Tried kickdown setting on and off..
Placed one way valve on vacum to modulator to prevent boost from entering..

After looking at the service manual of the C4, it shows that all bands and clutch packs must be working because they are needed to select first second and reverse. This can only be something going wrong with the valve body, governor or modulator not allowing the correct combination of clutches and bands to apply?????

I know bugger all about auto's so if anyone can assist with my problem it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

George

Hi Adam,

I have modified the standard shifter to suit..

Why? Can this be the problem??

All the gear selections click into position as per normal. I have even tried moving the shifter slightly forward and back in case it was out of alignment...no difference.

The next move will be to replace the valve body and do a pressure check on the clutch packs.

Someone out there must know what is going on?!!??!!?!?!?!

help..

Had a C4 do similar things years ago, had a sticky govenor...
BUT....the govenor was sticking due to the burnt friction material etc from the bands and clutches. (old C4 didn't like new, hot, high comp, big cam, 351C!) :?

The box is brand new so it should not be dirt or clutch material ..but you never know????

Thanks for the info..Will check out the govenor out on the weekend.

Cheers

You've checked the vacuum and the linkage. #3 on the Ford checklist for no shifts is the Governor. The valve body comes a little after that.

govenor it is... tranny oil everywhere....again!!!!

Lets hope this fixes it..

I am itching to do a nice 3rd gear burnout :D :D

thanks for the info,,

G,day,

Would you belive it..after all these months the auto is almost fixed :!:

To cut a long story short, We did not check the govenor because all the tranny specialist suggested other items like one way clutch, valve bodies, clutches ect..ect.
So, even though we ended our conversation with the govenor being the next item to check, I was sent on a wild goose chase by the professionals.
I changed modulator, valve body(twice), and wasted $100.00 on a BM shift kit that didn't suit!!
I was then told that the box will need to be removed so they can go through it again.

I was very supprised that they all totally overlooked the govenor..so the other day i pulled of the extension housing just to check...

What did I find :?: :?: No govenor installed!!

NO..Only joking..

My mate who rebuilt the auto basically F@#$ed up and put one of the washers in on an angle causing the govenor valve to only open half way.

That was it...Took 20 litres of tranny fluid, a shift kit valve body and modulator to resolve this simple f... up

BUT..I now must put the original valve body back in as the current one is standard and has a sloppy shift.

Never ending story...

The alloy tranny lines rubbed against each other and split yesterday..more oil lost..

Lets see how we go from now??

The rest of the car is still a mess.

See Yah

Your specialist transmission guy needs a serious wedgie or dead leg, at the very least. My "diagnosis" was based straight off the Ford FACTORY manual. He ought to've known. Fingers did.

At least you're back on track.
