will a small block ford starter (289 - 302) fit on a 250?

also just for my own info whats the teeth on the flywheel / flex plate 156? 157? 158?

thanks

check kragen .com when you find the right one click on the picture and it will have a part number on the bottom and the info. flexplates are very model specific and aren't interchangable. kragen is not the cheapest niether is auto zone. go on like yahoo or msn and search for the first 4 digit number letter combination. for example (d8bz). thats mine. i have been looking for one for about six months for one at a decent price and i found one the website is www.actionsalvage.com/Flywheels. mine went from autozone's 79.99 to 49.99 on that website. well good luck

I have a 250 flexplate (same as 302W but unbalanced). It's 157 teeth.

Here, the bent eight starter is a common swap-in. Two bolt ears as opposed to three, but fits and works (and is often cheaper - why it gets used).

Regards, Adam.

A useful thing I found out is that most early Ford starters (not sure about late model) - the nose that bolts to the engine can be taken off easily and swapped onto another starter with the wrong bolt pattern. Just don't let the armature slide out of the brushes. This may help people with a bad 6 starter and another good one that won't fit.

The swap is messed up by a combination of factors of sandwhich plate and flywheel diameter. Some 'sandwhich plates', 'engine plates', 'backing plates'or 'trans spacers plates' are 62.5 thou, some 125 thou.

After 1980, manual starters for V8's are often 157 teeth, and autos are often 164.

There is a dual fit SBF/250/240/300 backingplate from Summit which has a removable spacer which can fit either kind of starter combo.

The teeth pitch is the same for all starters, but the sandwhich plate differs. The 157 tooth has a thin plate, the 164 has a thick plate. The US has 157 teeth for 289/302 and the starters may swap over to Aussie sixes, but it won't fit the US ones.

Early 2.77's and Pre 68's possibly won't take US V8 starters as the flywheels are tiny 132, 136 or 148 items. They may bolt up, but the engagement is posibly to agressive.

The 164 teeth AOD/FMX found on 351/400's possibly won't fit the Aussie 188/200/221/250 which has 160 teeth.
