Starter?

I just got everything hooked up (I think correctly) to hotwire my car in order to see if I could get it to turn over (wires are mostly unplugged for whatever reason). When I hook it up however nothing happens, so I am wondering is the little bolt out the side of the starter where youd hook it to or is there something I am missing? Also I always heard of starters still clicking atleast when not working rather then just doing nothing at all... so should I replace it or rebuild it or well both?

Are you talking about the bolt with the nut on it, pointing slightly upward and toward the passenger side? That would be where you hook it up to the starter solenoid. It can be bypassed and hooked to the + side of a battery to attempt to crank it over. However make sure all safety precautions are taken before performing this and remember :

STOP DON'T DO THE ABOVE
The minute you put power to that bolt the starter well ingage

Uh I want the starter to engage and thats what I hooked the battery to and nothing happened.

The starter solenoid is in series with the starter + terminal and the battery + terminal.

If you directly connect the starter + terminal to the battery and have the case of the starter connected (via the motor - frame - negative battery cable) to the - terminal of the battery, it will engage.

if it doesn't, then the starter is trash.

I tried a couple different grounds but no luck... I will probally rebuild it but I think for now I might as well buy a new one to make sure the car runs and what not.
