I have a new ticking sound; I guess it's a lifter and not an exhaust leak like I first suspected. After it really warms up, it goes away.
The thing is, I just rebuilt the head. I do not want to remove it to attend to this lifter. Any suggestions, additives or secret fixes?
If you want to pull the valve cover you can dump a bit of seafoam down the pushrod in the hopes that it will soak into the lifter. A little ATF before a change seems to help also.
Back in my days working with VW engines (water cooled) I used to run 4 quarts of oil and 1 quart of ATF. It will be fine to add ATF even when you drain and refill. It sounds scary, but transmissions get just as hot as engines do so it can take the heat of the crankcase just fine. 8)
Speaking of oil... whats the preferred oil and filter for the inliners? I used to run Rotella (yeah, the diesel kind) in my VW's (which were not diesels), but I read that they re-formulated it recently and it doesn't have the zinc additive. I have been using a Motorcraft FL-1A as well.
I've run 1 qt. of ATF for about 50 miles, then changed the oil and filter. Do not take it on the highway either while the ATF is in the crankcase.
A product I used decades ago was Krex. Its an oil additive, and help quiet the lifters in my '72 Catalina alot. I recently saw a can of the stuff, but don't know if it widely available.
