I am running a Carter YF. Here is what has been happening lately. With cold starts I push pedal to the floor then let up halfway and it starts right away on the first try. When it is hot it will usually not start on the first try and it will burp out a puff of exhaust out the carb. After I try a few more tries it will start, but sometimes I need to floor it or others I give it half pedal or no pedal at all. My timing is correct (I do use a light) and I have been told it may be timing related. I replaced the metal fuel line between the pump and carb with a rubber line to reduce the chances of vapor lock but it has made no difference.

I am thinking of replacing the timing chain and gears but will it help? Also checked all vaccum lines and all looks good. Any help or suggestions would be a big help! :?

by the way, when it does start it runs great. perect idle, smooth etc.

Mine doesn't fire up instantly after going into a store for bit. I have an old '60 Holley. I think it is from the carb getting warm and flooding the engine. Yours sounds like it floods worse, if it is flooding. I have the carb spacer hooked up inline of the heater hoses. I don't know if this helps or hurts for this problem.

Next time you are going to start it hot, first pull the aircleaner and see if any vapors (steam or fog) are in the carb or if your choke is closed. I have a manual choke.

Mine starts perfectly first try if it's cold, then like futura it's a bugger to start if it sits for a couple of minutes. I usually have to floor it to get it running again. If I have to floor it, it runs rough till I find an open stretch and open 'er up a bit.
