Still wont start when hot; even with new starter

I exchanged the faulty remanufactured starter I got and just installed the new one. It started up with no strange noises. I took it for a test drive (poor acceleration as usual, but that is yet another problem) and had no problems. I came back home and shut the car down. I tried to start it up a few minutes later but got nothing when I turned the key. :bang:

It looks like I will need to install a heat shield. Another project, more money, more time, and less time driving the Mustang. This car has fought me all the way with every project I have done. Nothing has gone smoothly. Why does it seem like I am the only one experiencing this problem with the Pacemaker header?

I guess challenges are what builds skill...

could it be vapor lock???

i had that same problem before i put my header on and i just adjusted the carb till it stopped, speaking of adjusting the carb i'm running a little rich, need to do some more adjusting

also when i changed my starter i put in a new starter solenoid

I don't think I would be doing the heat shield first. I would take a close look at battery cables, starter solenoid and battery condition. With the design of the pacemaker header I just find it hard to believe that it is a heat issue

now, was it nothing at all?
no click from the solenoid or anything?
because if that's the case, turn the key to on, pop the hood, then just jump the solenoid

i find it best to use to screwdrivers with nice insulated handles, touch each terminal, then cross the screwdrivers
i can take pics of the process if you need

my solenoid was going out about four years ago, it stranded me and i called a mechanic buddy, he told me that trick, i jumped it and it has only now just started giving my trouble again

Check your battery ground and your engine to body ground cables 1st!

Remove the cables and take a wire wheel to them to make sure you are getting a good ground.

Then clean your battery terminals and if you havent replaced your battery cables in the last 5 years then toss them in the trash and install new ones.

It doesnt matter if they look good or not....if they havent been replaced lately then do it. Same goes for the starter solenoid thats on the side of the engine compartment. Replace it!!

There is no heat related issues with the pacemaker headers so forget making the heat shield.

Your starter is just drawing a couple more amps when your engine is reaching operating temperature and your starting system is not up to the task!

If the solenoid did not click, it is either bad or you are not getting power to it. Try a jumper wire from the battery and touch it to the "S" terminal on your solenoid and if it don't click then it is faulty.

All the cables are new and I cleaned the terminals today after the first startup. I ran the car again and when I tried to restart it when the engine was hot it would not start. No clicks at all. I will try a new solenoid. This will be the fourth solenoid in two years. :x

Thanks

I have been having a similar issue. I start the car fine drive to the gas station get a beer or two or whatever, get back in the car and go to start and nothing. I put the shifter in neutral and she starts right up. My shifter needs new bushing, I think that is why mine does it (possibly affecting the neutral safety switch). You might want to try moving the shifter around a bit and see if it helps. Definately make sure you got a good chasis ground.

I do try to start it in neutral and when I try to start it in park I have to hold it all the way up and put my left hand through the steering wheel to turn the key. :?

I will clean the engine ground. I did not think of that, thanks.

You either need to adjust your shifter linkage underneath the car or replace the shifter bushings or both. Only cost me a dollar to replace the bushings. Actually free because I spent so much at a local mustang shop so the guy gave them to me.
Also check the battery, battery connections and cables like mentioned previously. I have a similar problem where I always have to reseat my battery cable to get it started right away or just wait until it magically fixes itself. The cables are new, the starter solenoid is new but the battery is old. I guess my problem is with the battery post but I know what the problem is and I'll fix that when its completey dead!

Just my opinion, the headers shouldn't pose a problem. I agree with the suggestions from the other forum members. But, if you are positively shure that it might be header-related, could be that the timing and/or mixture is wrong and you are overheating the header and therefore starter assembly, because of that.

HI
Does it start5 when its hot if you hold the shift lever up like you stated earlyer, if so then I would be looking at the leankage adjustment or the positave netuaol switch not working properly.
