What is that opening in the exhaust manifold towards the firewall? And what is that small valve I see flapping inside the opening?

Sounds to me like the hot air for the choke on the carb. When the car is cold the valve is opened up and when it gets warm a bi-metallic spring closes the valve blocking off the heat to the carb.
