Tachometer

Hi. Does anyone know if a non contact tachometer can be used on a 200 ci engine? If so, what would you attach the piece of tape that comes with it on to measure revolutions? Thanks.

They are fun devices. I'll do a search. Let see, it was a Snap OnTM Tacheometer or similar I used a while back. Examples of a similar device here.

You attach it to any surface that revolves at a 1:1 ratio with the crank. On early 144/170's, you could use the crank inspection hatch, or with later cars, the harmonic balancer/main crank pulley. We used them at the materials testing lab for all those tedius measuring and calibration tricks, and just a little Loctite 401 and the tape was on the sieve shaker eccentric or sand equivalent gear for cleaness testing or the end over end shaker for clay soil hydometer tests, or vibrating table for soil or cememt tests. Its 200% better when it has an exciting autmotive application like this!
