The best straight six?

well, jeez. Talk about crippling perameters. post 64 leaves out the seriously high zoot (but 4 mained) GMC 228-248-270-302 family Venolia forged T slot pistons, Stellite valve seats...- 300hp on magnesium Man A Fre FI heads , alky w/ stock bottom ends @ Bonneville, and ummmmmmmmmmmZenith carbsummmmmmm....automatic tranies??
Folks whove lost thier left legs excluded, here, but why should such a useless device burden the question??
Best as in......?

8)

My first vote goes to the BMW M54 inline six engine. It made 332hp at 7900rpm and 262 ft lbs of torque at 4500rpm.

Second vote goes to the Oz Chrysler Hemi Six.

The top of the line performance engine in the E49 Chargers produced 302 hp (225 kW) @ 5600 rpm and 320 ft·lbf (434 N·m) of torque @ 4400 rpm. The increased power is due mainly to a more aggressive camshaft, high-load valve springs, triple 45 mm DCOE Weber sidedraught carburetors, tuned-length exhaust headers and a higher compression ratio of 10.0:1.

Naturally aspirated versions are capable of making 400-430 horsepower and 360-390 ft·lbf of torque, with the best modified version revving up to 7000-7600 rpm.

Like someone mentioned earlier it all depends what "best" means, but for me, Id definitely say the cummins(with the banks turbo kit of course...hehe)

ford 4L doch with a zf 6 speed auto
bmw refinment hell they design the head
big cube power and torque

:D For me it would not be just one in particular.
For reliability, performance possibilities, economy and long life ect,and not necessarily
in the following order,are:
300 ci Ford
225 slant 6 Chrysler Corp
292 6 GM

Well I'd have to say the RB series Nissan engines with their L series pedigree. The RB26DETT in the Godzilla was a great engine and along with the RB30ET found in the Holdens put the auto industry on notice of what engine design was all about. The GTR had a driveline that had ATESSA ET-S on demand 4 wheel drive, abs, g force sensing, lateral sensing, and torque split control. Nice combo in my books.

The Ford Falcon 4.0 is a great workhorse too and if reliability, grunt and relative economy are the main criteria then it has to be up there in contention.

I think "best" needs to be defined. If best means reliability then Ford/GM/Chrysler sixes score pretty well in my book. All the domestics will pretty much run trouble free for well up to 200,000 miles.

Diesels are an unfair comparison in my opinion. You can't get a Cummins in anything other than a heavy truck (3/4 ton or above).

anyone know if I coudl find newer looking Datsun badges for my brothers 350Z? for xmas last year I bought him a set of Fairlady Z badges.

I'll be a patriot: Ford Big Six, precisely because it doesn't have overhead cams, mile-long timing belts or chains (or any chain at all), or more than two valves. You want to race, you need all that s##t; me, I like simple for the street. Combine the Big Six with a Lentech-modified Ford AOD or AODE trans. A tough overdrive slushbox with as many gears as you really need.
