The 'RIGHT' muffler choice

I know, I know, this has been fairly beat to death in prievious threads. I'm in the 'collecting the toys' phase of the stang's rebuild, and am trying to decide on an exhaust system. I went to the Flowmaster site, and one of the phrases they used was "If you want to really hear your exhaust system inside the vehicle as well as outside it, the 40 Series is for you." While I would like that, I'm sure the wife will have other feelings. This is basically her car, so I need to build to her tastes. I still want the exhaust to have great flow, and good sound, just a tad bit mellower in the car.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Kris

If you keep lookin into the Flowmaster site, the 50 series sounds a TAD bit mellower outside, but inside it is super quiet. If you roll up the windows with mine, you cant hear them at all. Roll the windows down and you can hear em real good, lol. I never roll my windows up tho

I don't have these but Edelbrock sells a muffler called SDT (Sound Deflection Technology) which from what I understand was designed to eliminate MUCH of the interior noise caused by the exhaust system but provide a nice "muscle car" girrgle out back. But like droppedbrd said, super turbos (especially Dynomax) produce a nice exterior sound without the interior drown. This is the brand I'm currently sporting.

i'm optimistic about the Hooker Aerochambers, they're nice and mellow on my truck until i put my foot in it, and i'm hoping they'll have the same effect on my mustang

If you are looking for the muscle sound with out interior noise I wouldnt reccomend the 40 series. I have them on my car and they are loud inside and out. They sound nice but loud.

So do the 50 series sound very close to the 40s out the back? They're just quiter inside? Not sure I uderstand the difference here.

--Sorry, whitepony, for kinda hijacking this for a sec.

Not at all. I'm trying to figure this out myself. Here are their graphs on how loud they are.

that's crap
if it doesn't show it in decibels it doesn't mean anything, you can't reference it at all

wait, didn't Mustang and Fords or Mustang Monthly do an article showing different decible levels? I'll refer to my "library" and get back...

Part of that "crap" makes sense though. Part of the sound attenuation is a function of the muffler size. The 50 series has larger dimensions. The decibels are going to be a function of the particular engine size, configuration, exhaust piping, engine rpm & load. The interior noise is going to be dependent on all of the above as well as the specifics of the test car and how it resonates in that vehicle. So given all of those variable parameters, I am not sure that published decibels would give you any more information as to how a particular muffler will sound on your particular ride. So basically, I think we're stuck with crap.

It's only a couple of mufflers. Compare the cost against a meal out, or something like that. Everyone has slightly different tastes. If you don't like it, why not try something else? Compared to the cost and hassle of major engine work, it's pretty minor.

You want to be able to hear the traffic, and not begin the process of industrial deafness. Aside from that, it's personal choice. Want to wear my socks? I didn't think so.

No way i could smell them socks from a block away how long have you wore those things, a month? . Hey evan do you have any soundclips of the aerochambers on your truck j/w the sound. also any1 have or know where i can get the sound clip of a borla. I've heard 50s/40s/magnaflows and turbos and a few others. So far best sounding was the banks muffler (f100 something) is his user name had they sounded sweeeeet.

I have flowmaster hushpower mufflers installed on a dual outlet header.
these mufflers are real expensive & sound great at idle but on acceration I am very dissapointed.
From all the sound clips the borlas sound the best. Just a matter of choice.

These hushpower mufflers are very compact & have a heat insulation around them so they do not radiate much heat to the body of the vehicle.
I may go the borla route or just good old 40 series delta flowmasters??

For very informative article on mufflers go to Google type in "Giant muffler comparison" as it will give more of artice this way than going direct to link. Has sound clips as well.

The charts make sense to people who dont give a care about, nor know about decibels. Its pretty easy to understand their chart, and they are spot on, my 50s arent as loud outside as Jmo's 40s and inside his are loud and mine arent at all. 40 series mufflers are the best Ive ever heard, followed by 50s. Other than that, I have yet to find one that I even remotely like the sounds of.
