So...what is it? I had to get a new one for my truck and was just curious as to how it works.

It's labeled 1, D, 2 on the switches tree.

just another useless smog-era-gizmo. when coolant tempeature reaches ~230°F, that valve switches from carb vacuum to full manifold vacuum. with factory-set dizzy, timing will be advanced to full advance at idle, thus helping to decrease engine temperature and increasing RMP by about 100rpm.
