i have a 67 stang with a 200ci i was driving home form work today, and it started running really bad. it also started ticking. its a fast tick. i think it is coming from under the valve cover. it also started stuttering really bad from the take off..... any ideas :?:

the gauge says the oil is good, but i dont think you can trust a 40 year old gauge. ill pull the cover off tommorow and take a look at it.....thanks guys.

Bad plug wire or distro cap...what were you doing before it happened? I'm thinking the valve train is affected slowly, over time, not instantaneous like you are describing?

Ticking could be an arc from the ignition.

Had same experience. It was worn out fuel pump. Sound was coming from inside block, so it sounded like valvetrain.

Loosen the pump bolts, and pull off pump while running. If noise stops, it's fuel pump.

Bent push rod or broken rocker arm will happen instantly. Could possibly be worn cam lobe or stuck valve.

Or just some trash stuck in a lifter. How often do you change the oil?

I'd get a piece of heater hose, use it like a stethoscope and try to locate the exact source of the noise. If it's the valvetrain, you could pull the valvecover and with the engine running try rapping on the noisy rocker with a soft mallet.

Well, I'm going to offer something a little less catastrophic. Try adjusting your valve train if you have adjustable rockers. I've had that happen before...one of the adjustment screws did not have a lot of resistance and would back out a little overtime until all of a sudden the engine woudl start ticking because the hydraulic lifter couldn't take up the slack anymore. So check that first...it's quick, easy, and best of all, free (if you reuse the valve cover gasket).

i havent had the car long but i changed it when i first got it. maybe 500 miles ago.. the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires are new. i put a mallory 6a ignition on it when i first got the car. i dont think that is the problem cause it has been running fine until now. im going to go pull it apart this afternoon. i was going to do it last night, but the army decided to give us all a piss test. i hope they dont find out im addicted to speed

too easy guys. i pulled off my valve cover, and started it up. as soon as it fired i noticed the culprit. a loose rocker arm shaft bolt. thanks for the help though guys.

FORD SIX FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
