time to torque the balancer, how to keep it from spinning?

keep the rotating assembly from spinning
head is still off, so i have no compression to work with

Remove the starter and have a friend hold an old screwdriver or prybar between the tranny and flywheel ringear. You know, wedge the prybar between a tooth and the edge of the backing plate\transmission.

Strap wrench around the balancer

A piston stop can also be used, if you don't have the ring gear on. Piece of steel bolted across a bore with a threaded bolt sticking down into the bore to keep the piston from coming up.

This is more effort than you will want to go to, but I saw a wrench at Harbor Freight the other day that is ideal for turning the flywheel and would work (I think) to lock up the crank as well. I can't remember the price but it was'nt much. I'm picking one up next weekend if they still have them.
