I have a 76 Maverick with a 250 and C4. I want to increase the power without spending a bunch. One trick I am looking at is swaping the timing gear/chain with a 1970 set. What type of power/torque can I expect?

Thanks,
Ken

unless the '76 is smog modified, and cam timing is messed with as part of that modification, i don't think you'll gain anything

I got a shortblock from 1978 to rebuild for my '69 Mustang. Once it was done I had a heck of a time getting the Weber 38 tuned. It just wouldn't stay running at a low speed idle. I remembered reading in the Falcon 6 Performance book that the cam timing had been retarded for 250 engines past 1971. I changed my cam gear and chain with a new one for a '69 and it made all the difference in the world for the low speed idle and stoplight to stoplight acceleration. I was able to get the carb jetted properly and right now I'm getting about 20 MPG around town (when I keep my foot out of it) and 22-23 MPG on the road. I'd recommend it.
