timing issues?

Been a while since I've posted here, so here's the story:

Recently had the whole car rewired from the fuse block out. Currently have the DSII set up with the GM 4 pin.

The car fires up and runs. However, on the next start up the car won't start and back fires out through the carb.

Is this a sign of bad dizzy gears?

It ran before, so I'm think it might be electrical.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Well I doubt it's the distributor gear per se, but yes it could be a timing issue.
Ever replaced the timing chain?

is the distributor loose? does the hold down engage properly? if you can move the distributor either by hand or with the tap of a hammer, then the hold down is not doing its job.

Is your HEI mounted in a cool location it may be overheating or the heat sink might be too small? Check that your HEI heat sink has the dielectric grease under it and also run a Good ground to one of the mounting screws or clean the existing one if you already have one. After that you might replace the HEI with another know good one. Good luck

We're going to check to hold down next. and yes the HEI is in a good place with dielectric grease and grounded well.

What I find odd is that once the Distributor is re-timed it fires up again.

Thanks

which confirms my diagnosis.

Before it ran just fine with the carb. The only things recently changed were the wiring and the distributor before that

:hmmm: If I might make a suggestion.Go to a computer sales/repair shop and get some Artic Silver(R)or some similar product. It will transfer heat much more effectively than the dielectric grease.A bit expensive,BUT light years ahead of the grease.
Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.
