Another thingy I cant figure out....I can see the timing claw with all the marks but where is the marker that you put the chalk on...the pulley? I have been tuning my car be ear...but I really would like to know what my timing is... Any help here?

My '63 170 has a notch on the edge of the pulley. I think I found mine by sliding the edge of a knife along the edge of the pulley. My eyes aint so good. Hopefully you haven't spun your crankshaft pulley. Then your back to doing it by ear. Until you get a new one anyway

My eyesight aint too good either..specially with bifocals. So I am going to look real hard in the sunlight. Is the notch on the belt side of the pulley...or on the flange side of the pulley... (I have a dual pulley) On older cars with dampers thats easy...is there a stamp on the pulley too? By the way..thanks for answering..I thought maybe the question was too newbie for an answer!

I don't remember the exact details now. I'll be checking the points & timing soon, so then I'll get a refresher course. I need to spend more time in the garage. Maybe If I run cable tv & a telephone out there, I'll get off my butt now that winter is over. I also need to find a way to stop gasoline vapors from escaping from the Falcon so I can feel safe heating the garage and use the winter to do the mechanical work on the car. My mind is wandering now.

Oh yah, The timing mark. I would guess that it will line up with the claw location. Try your finger nail to feel around the edges of the pulley.

Hi Jammer,

The pully timing mark is quite small. A"v" notch on the engine block side of the pully. The knife edge idea is a good one. Once found, clean it up and spot it a dot of white paint. This will show nicely when the timing light hit it.
