Tranny line to intake log?

Hi guys,
1963 Comet 170, 2 sp Mercomatic. What is the purpose of the 1/4" steel line that runs from the back of the tranny to the intake manifold? Is this a vacuum line?

Also, I just got a new carb plate with the water line still intact. My original one had no tubes to clamp to anymore. The new one is off a 66 mustang & has a nipple sticking out on the intake side that my old one didn't have. Is this something for vacuum? Could I run a line from a closed breather cap to this to draw off some blowby?

That 1/4 metal line sounds like the vacuum line that goes down to the transmision modulator valve.

That is the vacuum source for the PCV valve. Being a '63, your engine may or may not have one (probably doesn't). If it doesn't have a PCV valve, just plug it.

yes, but I think you'd want a pcv valve inline to control the vacuum.

This vacuum line helps you transmission shift gears. If you notice that when you slow down and the tranny downshifts hard "CLUNK". You should check for a vacuum leak. Every 10K miles or so, go down to your modulator hose and check it's condition. If it's spongy, change it. I hope this helps..ZZ

I just wondered if it was a necessity while I was working on it. Figured it was a vacuum issue for the trans, but couldn't find any info in my manual.

I had an original steel line that looked like a silly straw, so I bought a new one at napa & bent it to minimize it's visibility & give that area a cleaner look. I hope it still fits when the header goes on!!! Any advice on what to do with that when I do put the header on & no longer have the hole to plug it into???? I didn't think about that till right now. Shit! Well, any helpful hints from past experience heavilly appreciated.

Why would you no longer have the hole to plug the tranny vacuum line into with a header? That's in the intake log, and the header doesn't affect that at all.

There is a line from the choke housing to the exhaust, and that can be replaced with a "stove," which will help the choke open sooner. There's a line from the intake manifold to the transmission, which is needed for smooth transmission operation. I've e-mailed you a picture that might help.

That was a stupid thing to space out on. Yes, I know the vacuum hole is in the intake log. I have been staring at this area of the engine everyday for the last 45 days. I just somehow combined the intake & exhaust in my head yesterday. Please disregard that last post. As far as the choke to ehaust manifold line, I can hook that up on the header, or try the stove approach as mentioned above. If anybody can recommend something specific to use for the "stove" let me know. I have not seen this done before.

Or you could just stay with the manual choke, depending on what carb your running. Do you already have an automatic choke?
