Trans or Starter Problem

After getting the car running good another thing seems to go wrong .
I've heard some grinding sounds come from the starter bellhousing area so I loosen the header , pull the starter and found metal shavings. I had a problem with this starter when it was new , I bolted it in , started the car heard the sound of grinding , pulled the starter and saw it had ground away some metal from about the 11 and 6 oclock position . So I added a shim ground off some metal from the starter from where it had been damaged , bolted it back in and had no problem until now. Seems now under acceleration I'm hearing the same sound again . Now is it the starter or the flywheel , flexplate ? The engine is out of 68 Falcon , and trans is from a 65 Galaxie 3 speed A/T. Seems when someone did this asfab they did not bother to match the trans bellhousing to the block , or is this where the problem lies ? I will try to get the pics on here to help explain what I am talking about .

Thanks for any and all help.[/list]

1) Do you have the proper "nose length" starter?
There are longer and shorter versions...

2) Do you have a "spacer plate" between the engine and bellhousing?
It is about .090" or so thick (less than 1/8") If not, you need to get the right one.

The spacer plate is installed don't know if it is the right one or not. The starter has a 2 3/8 nose on it . All I did when I took out the bad one was to match it up with the new one , but could bad one I took out been the wrong one in the first place . Heres some pics to help.

The teeth on the TQ converter are looking rough.

Measure from the starter mounting surface to the gear and use that to choose a starter.

Pulled the Trans this afternoon , since I have it out any suggestions on matching the bellhousing to the engine , adapter , will a 68 bellhousing fit a 65 trans ? There were only 4 bolts on the housing to block , just seemed like there should have been more when looking at the mounting , no guide pins , I am totally lost on the miss matching of all the parts , anybody out there able to decipher any of this . 68 bolted to a 64 bolted to 65 , I've gone crazy . Whos got the master catalog of interchangable parts

After consulting with many Trans Techs, many have replied with 2 solutions.

Improper auto transmission alignment placement.

He says my engine came with a manual from the factory and was replaced with the C-4 and if not properly aligned with my block the problems I am having occur.

What says you?

Mechanic B says

3 Problems can exist 1 bent flexplate , 2 Bad Torque Converter , 3 Bad Starter with all the above.

So it sounds like I will opt for a small starter , so I don't have to unbolt the header again , 2 replace the the old ring gear do to it being all chewed up , 3 make sure I the last as wipe did the above .

Hate doing anything 2wice

The holes in the flex plate looked damaged from the torque converters bolts. I'd change that for sure. The ring gear on the torque converter looks too far gone if it was mine. That will be fun to fix that cheaply.
