Turbo oil feed n drainage

Hi all,

need to know whether the oil return from a turbo can be drained to a higher point on the motor than the turbo itself??

eg the drainage holes in the head....

so the oil pressure from the oil feed pushes the oil up into the head,, will all the oil stuck in the turbo affect its running?? and will it stuff up eg boil the oil in the turbo on shutdown?????

if the above will stuff something up.. how can a drainage into the sump be made without removing it... i don't think drilling or welding are good ideas... any ideas.?????
metal shards in oil and oil lighting on fire are not the best things for engines.
 
far as i know the drainage has to be lower than the turbo itself.....

as for the sump issue, those are things you have to think about when installing a turbo and not too hard pulling the motor out anyway, what you turbo'ing by the way????

you cant have the feed above the turbo as you said its a drain so there is no pressure in itto force it anyway but where gavity wants it to go.
easy way to do it whould be hole saw sump while still full of oil drain oil out buy cheap crap flush engine 2/3 times and use an oxy to weld the fitting/pipe to the sump.

Turbo drains, with turbo higher than oil level in a verticle engine it must go ABOVE the nominal oil level, so into the sump or cylinder block above the oil level. If the turbo is below the oil level, eg Porsche, then you need a separate scavenge pump to draw the oil away from the turbo bearing housing and pump it either through a separate lube cct or back to the engines lube system.
It is vital that the oil can get away from the bearing as it will overflow the ring seal and go into the turbine housing where it will produce LOTSA smoke.
So if your talking about a falcon six, take the sump off and weld in a drain line no less than 16mm, preferably with a screwed joint.
The feed is ok from a tee in the oil pressure outlet.

If you don't want to drop the pan.....
Use a punch and make a hole at a convienent spot for the drain-back.
Using a 1"x1" x 1/8" flat steel stock, drill a hole in it and thread it for a hose fitting. Weld this on your pan over the hole you punch in the pan. Ensure a complete weld around the square or you'll have a leak.
Re-paint the area, thread in your fitting using thread sealer, and change the oil.
And yes the turbo must be installed higher than the oil level, and the drain must be higher than the oil level. Or you must use a pump.

i like the welding of a hose fitting to the sump, as it would let no spater in.


how to make a hole in the sump without making fine metal bit in it ,,,

maybe a magnet while slow drilling then use finger get metal out...????
 
Don't drill! Just use a punch. Use a small, sharp punch to ge the hole started, then enlarge to hole using a larger punch and match the hole size with the fitting size.
Just be careful not to hammer in the punch to far so that it bangs into the rods, main caps or oil pump!

If you don't want to weld, you can use a tap to thread the punched-in hole to match your fitting. Just put a bunch of grease on the tap to catch the metal filings. I'd still change the oil afterward though!
