Turbo X-flow?

Hello all!

I am considering a (small) turbo on my efi 250 crossflow. I don't want to rebuild the motor (it's only about 50000km old), so a tiny bit of boost would be in order. The motor is in a Falcon wagon with a BW40 transmission. How much boost? Will it need a drop in compression? Will the trans live? What turbo? etc. I need everything to live for as long as possible.

Thanks!

Wagon.

Hi wagon, The 250 was fitted with a turbo back in the early eighties by various aftermarket turbo companies. The engine responds really well to the turbo mod, you could have some trouble keeping your licence intact though. As far as reliability goes, you wont have to drop the compression if you do a few mods with the turbo fitment, namely a decent water injection system, and straight gas(l.p.g.), although with the water injection you could run regular unleaded, but may drop a few horsepower(due to the milder state of tune required over straight gas.) A search of aftermarket turbo suppliers should give you some idea of price fitted, and expected horsepower levels. How much do you want to spend all up? cause an intercooler would be a good addition. There is a company in Adelaide doing L.P.G. injection, I remember that they used the factory fitted petrol injectors to inject the gas into the inlet manifold as a liquid, enabling charge cooling, the E.F.I. engine would benefit from this set up, especially with a turbo fitted. Here's a link if your interested. http://www.lpgli.com/index.html I would think that the standard B.W. 35 will need some work to handle the extra torque produced by the turboed 4.1, try approaching your local performance transmission specialist for an idea on the mods required to enable the trans to live for a while. The diff should be o.k., but if you find that your blowing it every 2nd weekend(unlikely) then try finding a good 4 pinion Borg Warner diff, I believe that these came out under panelvans and utes (not sure about the wagon though!

Thanks mate. The whole job would be done 'on the cheap', however, I want it to live. It already has a disc brake lsd from a 302V8 ZJ and the BW40 trans is healthy, for now. I might give up on the idea yet.
