Jon D. Rock On!

oh ok thanX!! i'll check that out!! do you mean posts called that or one's by Does10's?? ok well i'll figure it out thanX!

Jon D.

Jon,
I'm Does10s! Happy to meet you!
There's a lot of info in these forums on turbo'ing a Inline 6. Either stay in this forum or do a search for my name or a couple of others: Linc's200, Drag-200, 62Fairlane170.
We all have had some success (a lot of it actually!) turbocharging a straight six. I think 62Fairlane170 will have his running pretty soon! And I know of two more that will be running soon. At least I know they've got turbo headers anyway! :D
The Inline six makes a great turbo motor. Very strong bottom end and plenty of room to put the hardware in the engine compartment. All the motor needs is a little pressure to push the air/fuel through that stupid log intake manifold and it wakes the motor right up!
You'll love it!
Any questions, just chime in and ask away!
Later,
Will

so about the headers...do i have to get headers before i can put on a turbo?? yeah well i thought at first you could hook it up to the exhaust manifold but i'm not shure anymore...and yah by any chance is there any posts that is like the whole build-up?? cuz i was hoping to find a step by step inscructions/ or something that gives me some more info then bolt on a turbo/intercooler and go--> cuz i know i need new exhaust ect. but please help me but thanX and ggod to know yah!!

Howdy Jon,
Welcome aboard. You can run a "j" pipe from the original exhaust manifold to the turbine inlet, that is what I have done. I am using the Garrett T3 "Super 60" w/ .48 turbine and going to run about 8psi. This is not a drag/race setup I am building, but could scare a few V-8's if I wanted too. I should have it up and running in about 2-3 weeks (what slows me down are 3 daughters and a son on the way). The bad thing is it is a DIY, no bolt on and go here. Just get some good computer time at this forum and search basically anything from, again, Does10s or Linc200 or Importkiller. They have hit on just about all/any post about turbos and building a good setup. This is a good forum and as are the people who make it. Good luck.

oh ok thanx kirk!! yeah i will be running a j-pipe for the time being!! but yah when you get your car done please make a thread and post some pics!! but yah i wanna eventually custom fab. some headers!! but yah thanX for all the info and help and yah i found some of those posts they helped me alOt--> this forum roX!! ~peacccce~

Damn, I knew I forgot someone! Sorry ImportKiller!

Ya a J-pipe will work. Linc's200 and Importkiller are setup that way.

I spent SOOO much time looking up info about turbos, the best thing was searching the forum, and googling.. learn how a turbo works, and how to read turbo maps. Quite a few are in the process of turboing their cars, I never made it quite that far, I still occasionally check ebay for a deal I cant pass up to give me an excuse.... Good luck, Tommy

Are you hell bent on keeping the 170?? A 200 makes a lot more sense.

Did you read my thread " Another turbo 200 nears completion" ?? You can learn a lot from it.

My S-3/O trim turbo may be up for sale soon. It is almost brand new. If I build a new motor with a SP aluminum head, I am moving up in turbo size.

.

No i'm not stuck on a 170!! if i had the money i would get a bigger motor!! but yah i found a guy that has i think it's either a 250 or 300 for $100 it needs a rebuild...but i saw it it's pretty nice!! considering.but yah i realized it's really hard to find parts for a 170. how much do you want for that turbo? but yah guys thanks for all the help. and do u know of a place where i can get an adapter for a 2bbl to 1bbl or a way to do it if u could let me know that'd be great!! oh yah i read your thread about another 200

OOhhhhhhhhhhhh Kaaaaayyyyyyyyyy.......

Slow down there, hoss.

1) Please learn to type properly. It hurts my eyes to read that junk you type. Please take the time to do it right.

2) Money will always be a problem if you think you are going to put together a turbo set-up. You might want to re-think this - really hard.

3) A 250 is taller than a 170 or 200 and has a different bellhousing (read the stickys)
A 300 is REALLY large. It won't fit in your car.

4) I will take $500 for the turbo. It is a genuine Garrett item, not some chinese junk from ebay.

5) Do a search for "Adapter". They come from either Clifford (best one) or from Stovebolt.

6) A GN turbo will be too big. It was already suggested to use a early Ford T-Bird unit.

7) This a mature board for good reason, People here are very helpful and try to stay relatively professional in their posts. Leave the vernacular for your IM and chat instead.

jeeezzzzzzzzzz. yah well you don't need to be a jerk. anyways (sorry :-( I was told by a guy at turbo mustang to use a GN turbo cuz "supposedly" he had a friend that used one, my only thing was that a GN is 3.8 and my current motor is a 2.8...well sorry i'll clean up my typing...oh btw i don't use aim...how much do you think a 200 would cost that needs a rebuild? just to let u know i do as a matter of fact know this is not gonna happen overnight and that there is also money involved. the reason i came here was to figure out if it was actually possible or not. Sorry i didn't see that an early t-bird turbo was suggested. Thanks tho. very much seriously. :-)

Jon,
Hit the local wrecking yards. I can find 200s all day.
Any late 70's early 80's Fairmont will have a 200 in it.
You can usually get a whole engine from a wrecking yard for around $150.
which isnt alot of money. You could also wait for one of the 50% off days and get an engine for $75.

Finding Turbos in wrecking yards is difficult, plus you would want to be cautious about using a wrecking yard turbo. If the car is in a yard its been probably been abused and so will the turbo.

Best of luck,
Nathan

ok well thanks alot Nathan!! yah i went to the j/y today and had no luck so tomorrow i'll call around again to look for one. but next weekend is the NMRA & Ford Expo here in Columbus so i'll try to find a turbo there and some new quarters for my car. but yah i'll check that out

There are two kinds of Turbo T-bird turbos used - the earlier ones used Garretts and the later ones used IHI turbos. The IHI turbos will not make as much power, so are easier to find and a LOT cheaper than the Garrett turbos.

Also look at some Volvo and Saab cars for a cheap T-3.

I have a small TO4B I'll be putting together with good used parts. I may even build up a T-3/T4 Hybrid from all of the good parts (read: not burned up!) that I have around. Give me a little time and I'll see what I can put together.

I recall reading some short stories by Mark Twain. He would right in the same manner that the individuals spoke during the era of the story. The stories were a very challenging read - a lot of focus was involved. Why am I thinking about this? I wonder.

Scott, I think you meant to say: "He would write in the same manner...."

Linc:
I get at least as frustrated as you do with the quasi-illiterate nature of some of the posts. Inability to spell or to differentiate homonyms is bad enough, but the intentional misspellings of text-message speak really get me PO'd. But that is sadly the way of the 'net; there's nothing to be gained by reading the riot act to those who appear to be unable to read it themselves. Best to just leave it alone
