Turbos and Carbs, a Good Match?

The carb only supplies fuel relative to the air being forced past its venturi's.

When under boost your forcing more air past the venturi's, thus the carb supplying more fuel.

So when not under boost the carb is not supplying air as if you were, so you wouldnt be running extremely rich.

Most of the \6 guys don't know what they are talking about.

I think you should use a Holley double pumper, about 600cfm. Use the Offy manifold. Modify a big block mechanical high flow fuel pump to accept boost referencing and use the MSD 6btm with the electronic ignition distributor. The TO4b that does10 recomends is just about right, a second option is the '83-'84 Buick 3.8 turbo. A "J" pipe from the stock exhaust manifold will work great. But you need to remember that the stock manifold will start to sag and eventually fail. If this happens you will need to build a manifold out of 14g mild steel round tube or schedule 40 pipe. Both of these will last a long time.

This should get you to 10lbs of boost and about 250hp. At 10lbs of boost an intercooler is optional, you really don't need one until you start to hit 15lbs or more, especially on a carburated setup. The very nature of fuel atomization lowers the inlet charge about 30*.

If you want to make more power you will need to start modifing the head. This can be done with basic port and polish and adding the 1.7/1.44 valves from SI. You may want to contact CompCams about a custom grind for any camshaft changes.

Remeber Tom Drake has run low 11s, high 10s with a basically stock 225 \6 with EFI and menthanol at 13lbs of boost.

kesteb, are you a slant sixer? ive seen ur name around quite a bit.

as far as the carb and intake, id like to stick with a 2 bbl for now. im starting to search for turbos and such now. what cars did this TO4b turbo come on? id like to find a whole setup to make things a little easier instead of just the turbo. ive thought about the j pipe but thought i might as well modify the exhaust but im not sure.

are ignition upgrades a good idea? my car came from the factory with electronic ignition.

the plan is to build this setup and put it on a slant six thats in a car we have in the back yard. the motor only has 66,000 miles on it. ill use this as a learning experience and hopefully dont blow anything up. after i save some more money ill build up the motor thats in my car now thats a little tired. itll get all the good stuff.

what does it take to modfy a fuel pump for boost referencing. there was supposedly a vent on my stock fuel pump that i could run boost pressure to but i dont find one.

where have you guys gotten ur turbos? bought them new or went the junkyard route? im seeing alot of mitsubishi TEO4H turbos on ebay, what do you guys know about these?

thanks again guys, i hope to get this project kicked off soon

how bout chokes? manual, electric, does it matter, neither? just wondering how that works with the air blowing past it.

i had almost given up on this idea till i found this site, you guys are great, thanks

A proud owner of a '65 Dart with a 225 and 4 speed.

You remove the choke housing when doing a blow-thru design. The quickest and easiest turbo setup, is to use a buick draw-thru system from a '82-'83 3.8 vehicle. Try to get a complete setup, including the q-jet. After this, it is just a matter of connecting all the parts together. The "Before Black" areas on www.turbobuick.com and www.turbobuicks.com have a lot of information on this setup. Currently there is a gent that is pushing 400hp with water injection. His is not a stock factory setup. This engine is installed in a Chevy Suburban!

seems like there would be alotta cold start problems with the draw through, something i really dont want on a daily driver. i pretty much have the whole blow through system thought out but if anyone wants to chime in on draw through im more than willing to learn. seems like most ppl go with blow through though.

Does10's,
10 lbs? That's it? We've had Kelly's Falcon up to 15 without any problems at all (other than grenading a C4!)! So the myth of a high boost, blow-through carb is bunk. Just go to www.turbomustangs.com and go to the carburated forum to see how to go up to 20-25 lbs of boost.
Later,
Will

Your correct Will, you can boost much more than 10 psi, what I was refering to is for a ever day driver, if you go past 10 psi, you are on the road to many changes in engine setup and tunning and you start having to do other thing to get it to run smoothly for street use. Sure it can be done. But don't you think someone new to turboing an engine should do an easier setup first before going for 20 psi boost if's it's intended to be his daily driver?
