Hey

today i was out changing my water pump and the bolts were extremely hard to remove.. I got all of them except one, witch broke off, im pissed. So my question is whats the best way to remove the broken off bolt.. the bolt is broken off almost flush to the block, i tried useing a pair of vise grips to grip and lock the bolt and to turn it out but it keeps sliping. So im out of ideas does anyone have any idea on what to do.

Yes, Slade is right. I extracted a long ago broken bolt in one of my power steering pump support brackets this weekend. I simply drilled a hole in the bolt and then attached an EZ out to my drill, and backed the broken bolt out. Mine would not come out with vice grips either, but didn't put up any fight at all with the right tool!

Get a set of left-handed drill bits. Often times the bolt will come out (or start to come out enough) while you are drilling the small pilot hole.

i had a similar situation with a water neck bolt. i had quite a bit sticking out but the vice grips would not grip it enough. heating the bolt and surroundings helped me a lot. be careful of the gas lines etc but if you can heat it up it may loosen the corrosion and make it much easier to take out. if there's not much sticking out you will probably have to drill it out though. the left handed bits are a good idea. make sure you punch and indentation in the center of the bolt so that the drill bit stays put while you grill it out. if you use an easy out go slow and easy, if that breaks you'll have some problems.

yippie!!!!! thanks guys. i got that sucker right out of there. i think ill clean the treads in the block then go to napa and buy a new bolt. thanks
