I'm running a Holley 1909, and the lean surge is driving me nuts. I think I want to put a progressive Weber on my 170. The question is, which model? The ones from Clifford are too expensive for me, is there a common Jap car I could grab one off in the wrecking yard? I know they were used on lots of Datsun and Toyota stuff. Anyone know what type of linkage setup is included in the Clifford kit? Anyone want to share any good or bad experiences with this swap? I have an Offy 3x1, but this is my daily driver, and I still run vacuum wipers, so I don't think that's such a good option....

The 32/36 DGV is a great carb and can be bought much cheaper than from Clifford. Try any local speed shop, I'm sure you could grab one new for half than Cliffords price.

Also, check out this:

They have a 32/34 carb for $125 which would probably work very well on a 170.

Hi El Ranchito,

The Weber 32/36 was also built by Holley under license. The Holley-Weber 5200, or Holley 5200, was used by Ford (Pinto, Mustang II), Chrysler (Omni) and Chevrolet (Chevette, Vega). Rebuilt carbs are available from Stovebolt for $65 (www.stoveboltengineco.com). Check out the Holley Weber Conversion article in the tech section of this sight. Very well done. I personally favor the Clifford adapter as it allows the elimination of the Ford spacer. With the Ford spacer / generic adapter combo you will have hood clearance issues. Throttle linkage is easily fabricated with hardware store pieces. You don't say what year your car / engine is but if you are running the Load-o-Matic distributor in a pre-1964 car you have vac advance only dizzy in a block with a dizzy drive bore that is to small to swap in a 1968+ dual advance dizzy or a DSII. Since the 5200 does not have the provision for the spark control valve the Load-o-Matic needs I am not sure you can run the 5200. Maybe someone else can help here. If you have a 1964 or later block you can swap to the 1968+ dual vac or the DSII and run any carb set-up you want. Many of us have go this way with very good results. As an example you can see my set-up at FSP Parking Lot (http://www.kastang.net/fsp/parkinglot.html).

Feel free to PM me if you need help - Steve

Yeah, I have the early distributor. The engines a 61 170. I wasn't aware that there were differences in distributor bore sizes, I'm glad I got that piece of information. Thanks!
