I need some advise on a good distributor for my 65 200 inline 6. I just pulled the motor to clean and paint and I got the Clifford carb adapter for a Holley 2bb 2300 series. Someone told me earlier that my stock distb would not work.

I need a good one but not a racing or high priced one! If you have a suggestion could you please be specific as I am not familiar with all the different types. Also, I know there are non-points type and that sound interesting to me.

Your distributor is likely an early one designed to work with the Autolite 1100 with a Spark Control Valve (SCV). The SCV (if I recall correctly) yields a lower vacuum. The SCV looks like a disc with holes on the outer surface. It is screwed into the carb where the distributors vacuum line attaches. The vacuum diagram on these early "Load-o-Matic" distributors is designed to work with the lower vacuums provided by the SCV. Also (if I recall correctly) the Load-o-Matics don't have centrifugal advance (a.k.a. mechanical advance). There is a good discription of the Load-o-Matics by Jack in a stickie at the top of the forum.

With the later carbueretor, you'll need a newer ('68 and later) distributor that will function without the SCV and it will have mechanical advance. Some people refer to these as Dual Advance (meaning it has both vac and mech). Caution, there are Dual Vac Advance distributors that have TWO vacuum ports and mechanical advance. One vac would fight the other to minimize the advance under certain conditions - emissions, I think. People will just block off the one that retards the distributor - then it acts just like a Dual Adv (one vac and a mech).

Do a search for dizzy, distributor, dual vac or dual adv and you should find A LOT

I have a couple "if I recalls" up there - someone, please correct me if I am wrong. I'm going totally off of memory.

Oh...

The DS II is an upgrade to an electronic ignition that Ford started putting in cars in the 70's. You can still go electronic by slapping in a Pertronix unit in the points style distributors that I spoke of above. The DS II and Pertronix are both good systems. Some like one over the other. It's a big topic in the Forum. You can do a search for DS II and Pertronix and find info on those as well.
