a guy that i know down the street has a 200 that he wants to sell and says it is in good shape but has no way to start it up. it does not have a tranny and he is asking 150 for it. what do you guys think, is this a good price for an engine to rip apart and rebuild or is it too much.

thanks

i'd offer him $50 and work from there, prolly end up around $75-100
if he can't prove that it runs (to your satisfaction), then the only way to really check is to tear it apart anyways, or bring a starter, flywheel, bellhousing and battery and mock it all up

I6 engines just don't go for much, read through here find out what others paid

If you are planning on rebuilding it...no, you should get it for free. I paid $100 for a rebuilt 200 with 5k miles on it. sad to say, but the 200s just aren't worth much other then for boat mooring anchors. Offer $50. If he says no, walk away. I would negogiate. Because sooner or later, he's going to realize he isn't going to be able to sell it. Then he'll have to take it to a scrap heap and pay to dispose of it.

Or, since you are in FL, he just through it in the back yard (or front) and it become lawn art.

Dan,
Check to see what year it is also. Cast numbers passenger side.
What are the head numbers? Top rear of manifold log.
Are there any hard to get brackets on it?
I bought one recently from a yard I do a lot of business with for $150.
They knew its heritage and could verify low mileage.
It also had A/C brackets and some other needed items.
Also later I6(hardened valve seats).
Just an old 200 sitting in the corner? Maybe $50.
I'm buying whole cars for $200 with C4's.

i said this once and i said it again, damn if i was only up north again. when i was in the north lands my step dad and i had a yard that only people who knew the guy should get stuff from, at one point we had three parts mustangs in out garage 4 extra nine inch rear ends tons of engines andfor the three cars we paid 150 buck and and extra hundred to fill our trailer. now down here i cannoe find squat and what i do find is overpriced.

thanks for the info and i will do some checking on the engine and see what it has and what he might throw in.

i know i might get some hell for this but
damn the south

Hey I see everyone talking about 200's being a dime a dozen... I am looking for a good, strong running 200. I will pay for it... You don't have to give it to me or pay me to take it. Seriously... I would like a higher compression model that's ready to drop in to my Econo pickup without the need for rebuilding. Please let me know.

i think its worth it, i paid about 50.00 less for a rebuild with 20000 km (i dont know the math to convert to miles) and i still had to attach my own carb, alt, emmisions and electrical, and i dont even think mine has anything special done to it, just a stock rebuild. i got a tranny with mine too but it sucked and i ended up going to the wrecker and getting another one. but i do think that u should get it, it sound like a deal to me!
