What's a hotter plug?

My #6 cylinder's intake valve seal is shot, leaks oil into the cylinder which then fouls the plug in about 400 miles. I'll get it fixed, but in the meanwhile...

Apparently the plugs our engines use are already (Autolite #46) at the hottest end of the heat range.

Anybody know of a plug that'll run hotter/cleaner?

Go to your auto parts store & purchase an anti-fouler spark plug adapter.

What this does is move the plug out of the combustion chamber & it screws in to the adapter.

I suggest from experience that you use a colder plug when you use this adapter.

I have also drilled out the small orifice of the adapter larger if your oiling problem is not servere.

The hole in the adapter is say .125" & you may be able to drill it out to .155" on a trial & error basis. You want the largest hole possible to the combustion chamber for better combustion.

But remember once you drill it out & you have a fouling problem which i doubt you will have to purchase another adapter.

I ran a small block chevy for a year using the anti-fouler adapter.

The compression in the bad cylinder was only 75#, but the engine ran fine using the adapter. Give it a try, especially if you are strapped for cash at the present time. Bill

Those things work? Seems like they'd "hide" the spark from the mixture...but I'm game for anything until I get around to pulling the head.

I was told an autolite #45 was hotter than a #46. #45s are what go in my 460 and I have run them in my 200.

That adapter sounds cheaper than an MSD box, but I have used MSD boxes on my cars. I used to foul plugs withing a few hundred miles before, but the MSD box seems to keep the plugs clean and I have basically ignored my plugs for a few years.

Yup on both counts.

They just make the plug run a whole bunch hotter which burns the fouling off better. The fact that it "hides" the spark isn't as bad as having a fouled plug. These are definitely in the category of last resort but they "may" help your engine run a bit longer before a teardown.
