Which alternator?

I would like to replace the generator on my 1961 Falcon with an alternator. My engine is a 1968 200 ci. I would like to use a "one wire" type with a built in regulator, and it would need to line up with my existing (stock) v-belt pulleys. I live out in the boonies and the nearest parts store is almost a three hour round trip, so I need to be certain that the alternator will work sight unseen, as I'll probably have it sent up on Greyhound.

Anyway, I could use a part number or a year/model description to help me get going.

I don't require super high output, I just want to eliminate one more fifty year old weak link from my powertrain.

I realized after I sent this in that I posted it in the wrong spot. My computer is one of those little netbook jobbies and the screen is so small I have to scroll to see the whole page. Newbie mistake. I have started reading other posts on the subject, although it seems most of the options involve changing pulleys and various washers and shims to get things working. The wiring part I'm fine with, I have a service manual for my car, and I'm not concerned about messing with the stock wiring harness.

I may take a look around the neighborhood for a 94-97 Taurus, or just carry my generator around in my truck and eyeball some potential donors.

I'd rather pay the dough to have a new alternator mailed to me, but if the pulleys need to be changed before installing, I guess I can go boneyard hunting instead.

8) before you go out looking for a late model taurus alternator(new they are $250), first determine what your electrical needs are. for instance if you are going to be running an electric fan, big stereo, etc. and have a high electrical load, the go ahead and get the taurus alternator as it will do very well for you. on the other hand if you are just doing the swap and not adding a lot of high draw items, then just grab an inexpensive alternator from say a 79 fairmont, and use a kit to convert to a one wire alternator. i did this with my 64 falcon and it works just fine. the only other thing you will need is a set of brackets from autokrafters of NPD to do the conversion with. everything lines up nicely.

Thanks for the advice folks! I assumed that alternators were fairly model specific in terms of mounting holes and such, but it seems like there a number of possibilities out there that might work.
