Which fuel pump is needed?

I am getting ready to install the engine in the car and was wondering if anyone has a weber 38 DGES installed and if you do, what did you use for the fuel pump. I have been told I need to get it regulated to only 5 PSI, so do I need to get a regulator? And also, do you need a return line for an electric fuel pump, and if so, how do you run it back to the tank.

you would need a bypass reg, Summit makes a filler neck adaptor, cut the hose, slide it in, you'v then got a place in the filler neck, for a return line

A regulator would be recommended, don't forget to use a fuel pressure gauge. No return line is needed, they're only used in high pressure fuel injection. Alex.

Thanks for the info guys, I still am not sure if I should run a return or not. Doesn't anyone out there run a 38 weber?

I am running a aeromotive regulator. it is a return/bypass tyle. it came with springs for both EFI adn carb. was pricey at $100 though

Someone correct me if I am wrong but you don't need a return line. Also for just 5psi you can use the stock mech. pump and not run an electric.

I am running a return since I have an electirc EFI style pump (high flow and pressure for under boost)

if NA you can run a returnless regulator (like the common holley ones) they are only good for a couple (under 10psi) change not the drop from 60 to 8 I need for my holley carb.

I jsut went this route since there are no good pumps that put out enough for a blow through carb setup (all you can find are pumps in the 12 psi or 60 psi range) for the cost of a GOOD regulator I settled on the aeromotive since it can work for both carb and EFI, flows enough fuel for 600hp, looks good, is rebuildable and can give better control than a non return regulator.

btw when I was running my 5200 (dges clone) I just ran my stock pump. give the stocker a try and see how it is.

From what I've been told, the mechanical pump shouldn't have a problem keeping up but can create too much pressure at higher RPM than the Weber's float needle can take.

A simple Holley or even Mr.Gasket regulator should work to limit the pressure. There are usually available in various pressure ranges. I have used a Mr.Gasket regulator successfully with H/W 5200 and tri-power
1904 setups.

The inexpensive regulator may not be as accurate but you can easily check fuel pressure with a vac/pressure guage:
