Will an xe 250 electronic distributor work?

Firstly, will it work in my current motor, a 250 pre-crossflow, running straight gas and stock dizzy? What will be required for the change over? Is it a simple bolt on?

And secondly will it work on an xf 250 efi motor that has been converted to run straight gas (ie no more efi stuff, just an Impco gas mixer)?

The car is a 250 tc cortina if that makes any difference.

Thanks

Yesiree bob. It will work fine.

The XD 1/2 Alloy Head and XE Alloy Head II ran a Bosch~ Motorcraft distributor called a Duraspark in the factory shop manual. The XE 4.1 auto advance curve is the best with LPG. That's becasue it has an agressive climb, and then is held back at about 34 to 36 degrees if you time it at 9 degrees before TDC at idle. Just be sure to measure the diameter of the hole with some of them plastic calipers you get at the hardware store. It should be 525 thou or 495 thou (13.35 mm or 12.57 mm). There was some kind of change around the iron X-flow, but I'm not certain about when it was.

If the distributor isn't siting neatly in the hole, then you'll have to sleave it with a made up sleave, or have it resized by machining. Earlier X-flows didn't have a lot of room around the boss for the bigger TFI unit used in the XF Falcons, so trial fit it.

The little hardened cog centres the whole distributor anyway, but to make it last, make certain if fits snugly.

Only other thing is that there are some space limitations. Some of the aftermarket Torco/Cain/Lynx/Hall/ Redline/Ultraflow manifolds tend to obstruct the earlier non electronic distributors.

Last point. It used to be possible to do an electronic conversion to any early Bosch~Motorcraft item is very easy to convert. My XD iron head had an aftermarket Bosch conversion to its Bosch distributor. They may still be avaliable as a spare part if you Ebay the part number. I think I had it on the Bosch carton. I'll check it out.

The XF ran a TFI (Thin Film Ignition) system, It's had two types of control unit. Each was calibrated for the trans/engine/air con spec, if the engine was a leaded or unleaded spec. It's a better to do an MSD LPG spark advance conversion on them as the stock control units were a little bit hard to work out.

You re-shaft the later distributor. This gives you the bigger shaft, a new bushing and the occasion to fit a Crow toughened gear.

Not cheap, but better than calamity.

Thanks for the info guys. And yeah dont worry I've got the crow hardened gear drive on order.

I won the electronic dizzy on ebay;

It was apparently out of an auto xe 250 fairmont.

My plan is to have it fitted to my straight gas pre-crossflow motor for a few months until I get the xf motor.

Then I want to transfer the dizzy on to the straight gas xf motor. I'll run it n/a for awhile then I'm going to turbo it. Will this dizzy be ok for that?

I'm not after mega wild numbers. 200-250rwkw and I'd be more than happy (for awhile).

Thanks.

It's up to you whether you run it as-is or modify the shaft. I've just dropped them in and been fine, but (the acid test?) for my own projects, no way. I spent the money, had the unit curved at the same time and grabbed a new gear. From memory, $225 plus the dizzy itself ($45), plus the gear ($55).

As long as you are aware of the light-to-modest risk of excess gear wear or seizing.

Where abouts are you located Thek?
There's a place in Bayswater, Melbourne that do a rebuild and recurve for $135.
Thats what I did when I went for straight LPG, now I can run static 14-16deg btdc, without killing the top end by being advanced too far.

Im in Wheelers Hill so Bayswater is like 20 minutes away. Have you got any details for the place? Might be worth a visit after I get the turbo in there.

Thanks.

The place is called Ignition Torque, the guys name is jerry if I remember correctly. Definately knows what he's on about, and GREAT prices too!
