hello, can anyone tell me what the map sensor is for on a carby xf?

i'm about to stick an unleaded 250 in my dirty ole cortina workhack and it has a map sensor. i wanna know how much of an impact it has and whether or not i need to change it over as well.

cheers

How about a couple of Yank guesses.
operate secondary carb circuit?
sensor for electronic ignition spark retard?
operate a smog device?
Our journey into computerised carbs was blessedly short and thankfully long ago.

the MAP sensor is used to change the timing depending on certian conditions.

Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor, is a device to send an electrical signal to the computor in relation to the absolute pressure/vacuum in the intake manifold.
Gives the computor an idea of throttle position by varying the voltage signal with the different vacuum signal.
Small plastic unit, upper, passenger side of the firewall/bulkhead on an XF.
It has both an electrical connection and a vacuum hose.
Noel.

cheers, i know what a map sensor does but i was confused as to why there was one on a carby enginewith no computer

ULP XF carby engines have a computer to control ignition advance. If you look in the distributor there is no advance mechanism  all done by the ECM. I would try to find an electronic dist from an XD-XE- or leaded petrol XF and drop that into the ULP engine.

dont bother using it, just use earlier model elect distrubutor, also being that model, it may have a plate under the carby, with a red and black wire in it, frow it out, and use an earlier model plate under the carb. also there are two different style of mainfold for the webber ones an 82 da and ones 84 da have been told the 84 da is the one to go for, as it flows better and is spose to be more open ... havnt checked this out yet

Gotta agree.
Bin the computer is probably better in the long run than using the computer control ignition.

i think you all got me sold on the idea of using an xd/e distributor. thanks all
