Stock HP numbers

I saw someone here once say that the stock HP for most of the 200s was around 70-80. Was this the highest these motors saw or have there been blocks that produced higher HP stock numbers?

Also, how much more stock HP does the 250 have over the 200? Or does it only have more torque with equal HP numbers when compared to the 200?

8) before 1972 the 200 was rated at something like 120hp, and the 250 was rated around 150hp iirc. after 1972 the rating system changed from gross to net, and the 200 was rated at 85hp. i dont remember the number for the 250, but its hp numer was higher than the 200.

stock the 250s main advantage was torque over the 200ci as the 200 and 250 both used the same head. This caused the problem where 200cis would run out of steam around 4 grand so a 250 with the same head was out before 3500 usually. RPMs are what help to build HP and since the 250 had a lower peak power rpm but higher torque its numbers were barely bigger then the 200s. Now if you built a 250ci to breathe properly then it will outperform a 200 easy, however i'm not sure if the 200ci could be made to rev much much higher then the 250 and therefore equal the horsepower ratings of one or which build would be more cost efficient.

The 200 I think will rev better as it has a much shorter stroke. I built a 200 and it loved to rev fast to 6000. Isky 262 cam, Stove bolt carb, ported head and about 9-1 comp. and a 3" exhaust.. It was fun.

whoops -long time since i clicked on that link- no longer exists -

note sure where it isnow -was acopy of a hotrod magazine article re getting the 200ci in a mustange from 64 rwhp to 120rwhp.

The hotrod inline 6 and the Inline Fever sites were both mine but Geocities closed a few weeks back and both sites are gone.

I've thought about bringing the sites back on google but I dont know if the interest is there to make it worth my effort to bring them back. :)

As far as the original question goes even though the horsepower rating is down on the mid/late 70's early 80's motors vs the 60's motors, I would think that the 80's motors would make more HP (stock) just because of the electronic ignition, bigger intake valves and bigger (more volume) intakes higher cfm rated carbs which would equal better flow.

Ralf,
Oz figures as quoted in my workshop manual.....

200ci (LC 8:1) 114@4600
200ci (HC 8.8:1) 130@4600
250ci (LC 8.2:1) 138@4000
250ci (HC 9.1:1) 155@4000
250ci 2V 170@4600

My 250 will quite happily do the same, although i had very little change out of 5k. 200 might be better value, bang 4 buck.

stevexysupersix - as said above those are GROSS flywheel figures.
it changed for ford australia at the same time as the USA when they went to NETT flywheel figures in approx 1972 .

the reality is somewhat less than the GROSS figures quoted

mustang geezer - i would like to get a view of that hotrod the inline 6 info - is there a chance they can make it a sticky on this forum?

or if its ok i'd settle for an email copy...
