Ignition Switch Position

Radiator Springs

New member
Hello all.
I'm new here to the forum and hope someone can help me out.
I have a 1965 Falcon.
Two questions......
1st....
I'm looking at getting a new Connector for my Voltage Regulator. My existing connector has 2 White 2 Yellow and 1 Green Wire coming out of it. The connectors at Rock Auto all have an extra Black Wire. I have no idea what that is used for. Anyone know? Can I still use the connector and just tape the black wire up?

2nd....
When I turn the ignition key to the "acc" position, both my oil and alt light come on. I understand those light coming on when I'm in the "start" position, but are they supposed to light up in the "accessory" position too?
I ask because I may have a wiring issue from the previous owner.

Thanks much.
Rick.

On my 64 Econoline, with a 3g alternator, the oil light comes on and that's normal(but I'm planning on 'fixing' it), but the alternator light isn't powered unless in run. I don't think the 3g would affect the alt light, same wiring just not the 1g regulator. But it's an E100 not a falcon so I don't know. Basically you are exciting the field in acc, I wouldn't think that's right. Doesn't seem like it would cause any problem b/c the alternator isn't turning and it's a ground circuit at that point, but the lamp is eating power. It's an easy fix though, just move the wire to the alt lamp from acc to run, or run a new wire from A to B. You only need power to the lamp when the alternator needs to turn on and produce power.

Do you have a link to the connector? I thought they only had 4 wires.

According to my manual, the green goes to the indicator lamp, Yellow goes to B+, White goes to the Stator terminal, And my book show's orange, not black, and it goes to the field terminal. I would assume the black wire is the field wire. The case of the regulator should be grounded. Are you running a generator or an alternator?

Hi Econoline and thanks for the info.
I have an alternator.
Also, do you know if both your Oil and Alt light come on when your key is in the "acc" position?
Thanks.

No they don't, just the oil. But that doesn't mean much being it's a different model. I'm having a hard time figuring out how your alternator is wired to the regulator b/c you definitely need the field wire. Fixing the oil and alt(or gen) light not being on in "acc" is an easy fix, I outlined above.

Only thing is, when I have the engine off and the key in the Acc position for listening to the radio, the voltage regulator gets warm to the touch and it smells like something in the voltage regulator is burning, but I don't see any smoke.

You should pull your ignition switch and verify that there is no jumper from run to acc and that the alt indicator lamp wire is not attached to acc. Then verify the regulator to alternator wiring.

From what I can see in that 65 schematic, it appears the alt lamp should not be on in acc. If the lamp is not connected to acc, verify that when the key is in acc, you don't have power at the run terminal on the ignition switch. It appears that the regulator excitation(the 'I' terminal) is powered before the pink resistor wire takes off that goes to the coil. That would be in run/start only. If your mustang originally had a generator something may be amiss about the way it was converted.
