1101 Carb Tuning

Just got a 1969 1101 carb 1 bbl for my 250 (Thanks Ryan!).
I rebuilt it last PM and set it up this morning-
Idles great at 750 RPM.
Revs with a pump on the accelerator
But will not run at fast RPM when the throttle linkage is advanced slowly-
I hear a lot of sucking in the carb throat then it stumbles and dies.
I adjusted the float during the rebuild last night.
I have it back on my bench now.
Suggestions?
Thanks-

It sounds lean - did you write down jet numbers while in there? Is it getting enough fuel pressure?

I am going to take it apart again and check to see if the jet is clogged- I'll check the jet number. I did not measure the fuel pressue but the car runs fine with my Holley 1940 carb using the same pump so I think I can assume the fule pressue is OK.

Thanks!

HEY MARC

.....SOUNDS LEAN.. THE JET SIZE FOR CALIF. CAR'S IS #65. COULD RUN AT #63 BUT NOT MUCH LOWER.

.....HOW EVER I THINK ONE OF TWO THINGS COULD HAVE HAPPENED.

...#1 .. TOP GASKET IS WRONG GASKET FROM THE KIT.

...# .. THE TOP GASKET IS UPSIDE DOWN.

.....I'VE SEEN THE UPSIDE DOWN GASKET ON MANY REBUILT CARBS WITH THIS PROBLEM. THE FIRST TIME WAS WHEN I DID IT. SO NOW I LOOK FOR THE GASKET TO BE TURNED AROUND BLOCKING THE HIGH SPEED AIR JET.

.....THE WRONG GASKET IS NOT AS EASY TO FIND...BUT CHECK EACH GASKET THAT CAME WITH YOUR KIT AND YOU MIGHT FIND THAT ONE WILL WORK AND ANOTHER WON'T.

.....IF YOU HAVE FOUND THE PROBLEM THEN STORE THIS IN YOUR MEMORY BANKS.

LOTS OF LUCK....LOL

PS. I DIDN'T SEE A RED COMET IN THE FALCON CLUB OF AMERICA SHOW. WERE YOU THERE?

Thanks for the advice, LeRoy.

Will check out the gasket and jets.

I was not at the Falcon meet (my C4 was still on the bench..) but I'm ready for Fun Ford Sunday in Vallejo on 9/11/05.

Hope to see you (and other Fordsixers) there!

jet size is 67
float bowl gasket looks ok - exact match
blew out all the passages (none looked clogged)
rechecked flat level
made a new gasket for the carb base just in case the old one leaks vacuum

But I found 2 missing check balls and installed them (from the kit)- not sure it that could cause cause the problem

will fire it up this weekend and keep my fingers crossed

Yeah those check balls are kinda important.
I left them out of a rebuild once and couldnt get the thing to do more than idle.
i think you may have found your problem.
