170 CID to 250 CID Swap

Hi Everyone,

For the past month I have owned a 1963 Ford Fairlane 2-door sedan (also a 1963 Mercury Comet for 6+ years), equipped with an 170 CID straight-6 and 3-speed auto. trans. on the column. The car was stored for the past 25 years in a barn, making the car very solid, but during this time the drivetrain seized up. I am looking at updating the drivetrain with a 250 CID straight-6 from a 1982 Ford LTD. Will I need to make any modifications to the motor mounts or elsewhere to make this swap, or will the late-model air cleaner be enough? Also in the near future, I would like to install a set of dual headers and a 3x1 or 3x2 carb. set-up. Will I be able to install the multiple carb set-up, or will there be any clearance issues? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi, I have done this swap and I can tell you it is not a direct swap. I have a 1963 comet that had a 170 and now is the home for a modified 250 that came from a 1976 maverick, with dual outlet header and modified 1969 head that has a 370 cfm hollley 2v from a 1970's dodge truck, mounted directly to the log, so it would fit under the hood. I did use the original motor and frame mounts and they fit with a little coaxing. I had to use smaller starter to clear steering links as well as the headers. I have been working on this for a long time and it seems like everything that I do, I have to change something else. Are you sure you have a 250 from an 82 LTD, I thought they came with a 200 with the lower starter position. I have an 83 200 out of an LTD.
