I have reason to believe the balancer on my 81 Fairmont has slipped. I have another one from an 83. Is there any reason why these should not interchange? The casting number on the 83 starts "D8", so, I guess it is the same as a 78. Can anyone verify the timing notch/crank key orientation? With the timing notch at 12:00 o'clock, the crank key is between 7 & 8 o'clock. This is looking at the balancer from the front. Would hate to put another bad balancer on. Thanks in advance!

They will interchange with no problems. One size fits all so to speak. If your worried about having a worn one, then replace it. Best place to buy a rebuilt unit at a reasonable price, is Damper Doctor

I ran in to a little problem with swapping a '71 170 into a 61 Comet. The dual belt groove balancer interferes with the fan unless I use the water pump nose extender which makes it interfere with the radiator. I have to put the single groove balancer from the '61 onto the '71 engine.

Thought this might be a factor in anyone swapping balancers, especially into early roundbodies. I would also appreciate the timing notch/keyway orientation request Fairmont200 asked about since I'm using older parts and the rubber sandwich is definitely rough on the older one.

Thanks,
Powerband

I'm moving this thread up again because I found that in FSPP's listing of the Harmonic Balancer it specifies for 200CID only. If you noticed my previous post I need to switch out the dual pulley Balancer on a '71 170 (C8XX casting) engine for the single pulley Balancer to clear the fan and still fit behind the radiator in a '61 Comet. The other Balancer I have is from a C6XX 200 engine.

Is their a difference between Balancers for 200' vs 170's??. It seems the more I find out - the more there is to find out!.:?

Thanks Powerband 8)
