250 2v rebuild.

2v XLE

Well-known member
G'day. I've got a TD pre-xflow cortina, which I'm going to have rebuilt in the near future for street use. Engine is a completely stock log engine, but I do have a 2v head sitting in the garage in really good nick, plus a Holley 350 that needs a reco

I'm pretty new to all this, so i'm just putting some feelers out before I splash my cash. Basically, I want power in N/A 2v form. What could I expect to acheive with a budget of $2000 (inc. labour) in terms of components and power? I know it might not seem like much, but I'm just wondering if I can get a rebuild, plus considerable power increase with 2g.

Alternatively, what could i get for $2500-$3000?

Thanks.

:)

Bit shy on the folding. Cam, timing set, mild headwork, extractors, electronic dizzy and a new carb will get you close to that amount. Over it, with mechanic's labour rates.

First thing to check is the compression wet and dry - that will reveal bore health. Then with the head off, check your deck height. Bad results here might force you into a short motor rebuild rather than much else.

Degreeing the new cam is very important and the Crow hardened dizzy gear is a must, too.

So i'll need $2000-$3000?

I'll get the compression tested. The rebuild might not be necessary. The motor is still very strong, and only has 137,000 original kms on it and blows no smoke. It'll only be a weekend cruiser, so won't put on many km's at all. I'm hoping cam (crow 1800-4800), timing set, headwork, extractors, dizzy, holley 350 will get me close to 200hp. If the compression in the motor is good, will i really need the block rebuilt? Or could i wait till its a bit more tired?

I'd only hoe into the block if deck height was bad or it really needed a re-ring. Melbourne's cheaper than Sydney but you could also look up "Dynoed 250" to see what he thinks about workshop rates (he's near Geelong).

More sophisticated work on the block really needs a torque plate and possibly preheating. A lot of rebuilts seem to suffer when this is neglected in the refurb process.

A dizzy will blow $450 with nice electronic coil and hardened gear. Try Ignition Torque or Performance Ignition for the mods (you need to donate a spare XW-XB dizzy and an XE dizzy). Pacemaker extractors - about $400 plus fitting these days. Head rebuild and mild tickle up, say $7-800 but make sure they flatten the exhaust port face. Crow cam if you haggle about $270, timing set $125, lifters $120, uprated valve springs $90 (I think).

"Cam change" ACL gasket kit about $70-$80, balancer speedy sleeve (repair item) less than $20, Look to a Barry Grant "Demon" carb if you can make it - better built unit than a new Holley. Consider angle milling the carb pad on the intake, to compensate for the adaptor height - then blend the adaptor holes with a die grinder once affixed.

All your miscellaneous costs - oil, filters, fuel, bits and bobs - maybe allow $180. This list will top $2½K in parts costs, no labour. I'd suggest a nice rebuild these days will go over $4000, but as I said before, stay away from the bores unless it's needed.

Cheers, Adam.
