My 250 wont start. I'm not very experienced...

At first i thought the battery was dead because it was a weak start. So i took the battery away, got it tested and it was dead. Picked up new one and dist cap for good measure. I'm confident that electricity isn't the problem, but may be wrong.

Now it sounds like it oughta start, but it doesnt. Checked carbi and fuel is getting through there. The shafts are turning and the effort of the engine is shaking the neighborhood as much as it ever did.

Start motor made a bit of smoke where the wires meet, so i d/c the battery and Death Ride Daisy is sitting outside waiting for me.

Any ideas?

8) ok first does the engine crank over? if yes then does then engine crank over at a normal speed, if yes then check your ignition timing. if no then is it faster or slower than normal. if faster then likely you have a bad timing chain, if slower then the starter is going bad, or doesnt have a good ground.

So many tests so little time.

OK does it crank but not fire?

Does it fire but not start?

Does it backfire spit back through the carb?

Do you get spark from the coil wire?

Do you get compression?

If it does not crank fix that first, its proubly in the starter motor, battery or starter solinoid or maybe the wireing.

If it cranks but does not start check the ignition system and fuel delivery.

If it fires but does not start check the fuel delivery.

If it backfires or spits out the card check timing and the spark plug wires are going to the correct spark plug ie the firing order.

If you don't get spark check the distributor and the coil.

If you don't get compression in any cylinder check the timing chain. an easy way to do that is to remove the valve cover and watch to see if the rocker arms are moving while the engin is cranking.

There are many other tests one could run some simple some not so simple. the best person to decide which ones to run is the person on the sceen, thats you, only you know the histry of the engine, ie when was it last running, what work was done on it recently.ect.. Only you can lissen to the engine and tell what going on. A simple rule of thumb for an operating engine is that it needs air, fuel, compession, and spark at the right time to run if any of these are missing or not up to spec the engine will run porley or not at all.

Good Luck
