262 to T5 swap, or any other transmission for that matter.

I'm looking at a '60 F100 thta has a 262 in it with the granny four speed. I was wondering how difficult it would be to swap in a T5. I was also wondering if any other swaps are possible like just a better four speed, or a C4, an AOD maybe? So what's the story on tranny swaps for the 262? Thanks, Barn-core.

I'm no expert, mostly I follow the board. fmartin and others have done this swap. I'm sure they will correct me if I get it wrong but my imperfect understanding is:

To do the T-5 swap you will need a 3-speed bell housing to modify. John Mummert? at the Y-block site will do it on an exchange basis plus he has the other parts and can direct you to the right source for the proper trans.

Over on the HAMB there have been some that said the GM Saginaw 3 or 4 speed is easily? adapted to the 4-speed bell.

I have no idea about autos other than the Ford-O-Matic that came stock behind some 223s, old tech but rugged and dependable.

All that being said, whats wrong with your 4-speed? Forth gear is 1:1 same as most trans (non-overdrive). I drive one in Phoenix and its not that bad. I would think that with the torque from a 262 it would be even better. As for highway, I'm changing out the rear diff to 3.50 gears. I have found several "pumpkins" for around a hundred bucks.

I hope this helps.

What I know is mostly from my personal experience. Unless It has been changed, you will have the 223 engine, as the 262 did not become available in the F100 until 1964 as an option. Either way, I think the bellhousing for the 223 and the 262 are the same. Mine had a 223 with a 3 spd box. For that setup I had to use an adapter plate to mount a T5 behind mine. The trans mount surface for the 4 spd is different and can be done as a direct mount to the bellhousing. John Mummert at http://www.ford-y-block.com sells the adapter setup I used and will sell on an exchange basis a bellhousing modified from the 4spd mount to a T5 mount. His setup is very well engineered and well thought out so it is very close to a bolt-up solution to what you wish to accomplish. Send hi an EMail. There is a link on his website to contact him. He is a busy man and may take a bit to get back to you, but he will and he is a very knowledgable gentleman. I would certainly do business with him again if the occasion arises.

As an aside, by your other post in the introduction thread, I am understanding that you have not bought this yet. If you would like, I could run down there to meet you. Could show you what info I have and maybe help in some manner with what you want to do. I am an Old Retired Widower, so I really have no constraints on my time or what I do. Let me know if you would like to meet and go from there.

Thanks for the info guys. I just don't like the idea of the granny gear. The guy said he recently swapped out the pumpkin to a 2.73 gear set, and he can reach 15-20 mph in first gear. The truck may drive fine the way it is. I just like to know what options I have open to me since I want to keep the six, and I really like the idea of an overdrive trans since this will be my daily.

I kept the 3.70 stock rear in mine, and with the T5 OD of .83. gives me about 2.70. This has worked out real well. If you go to a OD Trans and keep that rear you now have, you will probably find that you don't have enough 'grunt' to pull it in high gear, there just won't be enough torque available and you will be always lugging the engine, which in turn will defeat the purpose of the OD Trans.

The Borg Warner T10 and Top Loader 4 speeds would bolt in with the three speed truck bell and a clutch disk change the 3 speed top loaders (its has all sink.) is a good trans too and a bolt in.

For a C4 kit John Mummert at this link http://www.ford-y-block.com/c4adapt.htm
Now has the adapter setup to put the C4 behind the 215, 223, and 262 engine, besides the T5 kits that were already mentioned. Great that you have one of the 262’s I have been looking for a core engine or short block for a long time.

For an auto overdrive you can try Bendtsen’s Transmission Center

http://www.transmissionadaptors.com/

They have adapters for many vintage engines there is a listing for the Y Blocks Fords this adapter allows you to bolt any small block trans C4, C6, AOD, E4OD, T5 manual trans just by changing the flywheel. They had been developing a kit for the FORD 223 / 262 inline to use any Chevy Auto Trans it was to be done in the Fall of 2009 so you might give them a try.

This guy has done on his own the same thing as John Mummert does as far as the modified bellhousing. I started with a 3 spd bellhousing, so I had to use an adapter plate and a different series T5 with a longer input shaft. If a person was to do this on his own, it may be somewhat cheaper but there would have to be a whole lot of homework done to get it accomplished. Kind of a tradeoff whether to pay for someone else's engineering time and expertise.
