I am having problems with my H/W 5200. The carb runs fine when the throttle is only pressed enough to open the first barrel (small barrel) of the progressive carb. However, when I begin to open the second barrel in 3rd gear (C4 Trans) going up hills, the power goes up if the second barrel is opened only a little, but will drop off very quickly if I open the throttle any more. If I floor the car going up hills I loose speed until I back off the throttle to the sweet spot (max throttle without going too far open). If I keep the throttle floored too long the car begins to over heat.
I have tried adjusting the timing to ensure I am not knocking and I am 100% sure I have backed off the timing to ensure no knock occurs. The power loss takes place at the same point no matter where the timing is (assuming I don't go crazy on the advance and cause knock).
I have also tried re-jetting the second barrel main jet from 135, 145, 150, 155, 160, 165, and 180. The jet size does not seem to make a difference with the problem of power loss when opening the throttle too much.
The car runs fine on the first barrel (small barrel) and on accelleration at high RPM (downshift to second or first).
I have tried opening the second barrel throttle plate linkage by hand when the car is in neutral and the engine revs well. 160 main jet currently.
I am assuming the car is leaning out and am woundering if it is the fuel pump. I don't want to put too much wasted money into the engine, but should I replace the fuel pump, and if so should I use a stock pump or electric?
Engine specs:
5200 carb with clifford adapter
Dura spark II ignition
Clifford Headers Dual Exhaust
Clay Smith Cam H-6474-12-B (264/274 .47 lift with 1.6 ratio rockers)
One of my jetting combos, but I have tried many with no changes at top end
Primary (small barrel) Main - 145
Secondary Main - 165
Primary (small barrel) Air - 180
Secondary Air - 175 (also tried 160 and 180)
Thanks,
Greg
